do community service really stand out on college applications?

any suggestions on where to look for opportunities for volunteering?

btw, I also sometimes like to help people so it's not like I will do c.s. for only selfish reasons :)

Depends really on your field/major in college. Do something along the same lines and when you later put it down on your resume or application the prospective employer sees your dedication. But that it strictly for your field, a little help at soup kitchens and MS walks is also pretty good...those are traumas that affect so many people. ...you'd be suprised how much, people seldom talk about it. An ex-girlfriend of mine sorta got her job along those lines the hiring managers kid suffered from MS and they got to talking. Really lessened the interview tension and he hired her on the spot.

Anything you can list on your college application "helps" you. Whether it's a lot of help to list CS, I'm not sure about.

There are lots of places. One great place to do it if you like animals is your local animal shelter. That's where I have done a lot of my CS in the past.

i admit that i was selfish and did it only for college credit, but join community service clubs or try to do something that involves your major. SOme friends and i started a web design company that made websites for non profit orgs, I also helped out (tech support/built computers)at a non profit anti-pollution (technology focus, old monitors etc) place.

And it looks nice when you are typing things out and cutting and pasting it onto the Stanford app (filling everything and more below it), I didn't fill it up but a girl i kno did, but then she didn't get in. She's going to Yale tho.

I'm planning on majoring in either computer/electrical engineering or CIS. I'm not really sure if there are any community service that would match those majors.

<< ill assume this isnt community service from a court order... >>

hey, technically it's volunteer work: you volunteered to do community service instead of spending time in jail.

depends on the college. i heard stanford requires a good amount of community service. i beleive it was 60 hours or something like that...

they'll know youre bullsht if you havent done any community service all your life and then suddenly volunteer at a local animal shelter in your junior year of hs. try to make it look genuine.

for ex., I met a PHd grad from UCBerkeley through a mentorship program and weve been close buds for almost two years now. Needless to say, I was accepted to berkeley when i applied, despite my mediocre academic profile.

actually u shouldn't worry about it matching your major. college people like diversity and well rounded people. :)

one of my favorite volunteering jobs was walking dogs at this local shelter. i love dogs tho!

You can take in old computers from companies, rebuild them with games and stuff then give it to Shriners or places for children to play with.

that's right.

and its actually even worse if its your senior year cuz they can really tell that you did it just for your application. admissions people aren't idiots that are randomly hired to read applications. they do work for the school and often are graduates of the school. (well the admissions person i met was anyways)

if you had any other activities that you were really dedicated to during your high school years you should try to bring that to the forefront
