Community is back tonite.

Yeah I heard it's not the same with Harmon gone, but I'll still be watching.

Seriously, is anyone finding these episodes funny? It's borderline pathetic.

Didn't Dan Harmon (I think that's his name) leave or something? Did he actually write episodes? Seems like SOMEONE'S influence is missing...are these even the same writers?

How long was Community off?

Futurama left for several years and when it came back it had absolutely no soul.

The majority of the episodes are written by staffers, though there are some episodes this season that are written by first timers, but people who have been on the writing staff.

Previously, even though others would write them, Harmon would approve them and tweak them as necessary. He would also be in the editing room for every session so he basically "guided" the show.

Yes, something is just off. Timing, flow, organization. It just doesn't feel right. I'm giving it one more episode, next week they're back in the school so we'll see if a more familiar setting can bring some sort of cohesiveness to the show. I'm fairly optimistic but I'm going in with pretty high hopes. It needs to REALLY deliver next week.

I've laughed. But it's definitely felt off to me.

Harmon is gone. He was what made the show tick. Taking him away is like removing Matthew Weiner from Mad Men. Without Harmon, you looks that awkward, slightly creepy and obsessive personality that the show previously had. As far as I'm concerned, the end of last season was the end of Community.

I can completely see why they did it, though. Harmon wasn't a good business manager. He was always over budget, ratings were terrible, and he got himself in a public spat with one of the show's stars. He could get away with that if he had a superstar show, but he instead had a cult hit among an audience (internet watchers) that doesn't make the network any money. It's amazing the show was allowed to go on as long as it was.

LOL you said 'weiner.'

...I don't think Harmon can really be held responsible for the show's ratings. Blame whoever's picking the timeslot, IMO. The show has enough of a following that it should be a moneymaker.

Define 'internet watcher'? I don't know many people who 'pirate' TV anymore (which is to say, download something they could have recorded, anyway). If they don't watch cable/DVR, it's an online service that pays NBC money. Are you more referring to Netflix, maybe?

As in it's suffering from 'delayed' ratings? I.e. does bad on Nielson, but gets lots of DVD sales/rentals/NetflixInstant action? I can see that being an issue, but it seems like one that they should be able to adapt to it...they gotta realize it's only gonna get worse from here.

Also, good to know I'm not taking the crazy pills. I knew something about these episodes didn't seem right, and the above description of Harmon's role fits perfectly. All the general elements are there, but they're just floating in a big muddy pool. And that's not good for a show that was largely based on timing, shock/surprise, ect. Even if the jokes were as good (they're not), it's like they're being told by someone who's terrible at it.

This is actually becoming similar to The Office...I just want to scream at my TV, 'I DON'T GIVE A FUCK ABOUT JIM AND PAM'S QUIRKY ROMANCE; JUST HAVE CREED MAKE A WELL-TIMED STRANGE COMMENT, DAMMIT.'

My take on the Dan Harmon thing is that the show needed this last season to have enough episodes for syndication. If Harmon had stayed the show owners were worried Chevy Chase would leave. It might have cost them syndication money if the buyers saw the last season as not the same as the previous seasons.

I also think that Community was one of the most hit or miss comedies I have ever seen. It takes a lot of chances and often falls on its face. I think tptb might have been hoping a season with a more mainstream showrunner might actually make the show more accessible and possibly get it continued.

I think it's been going okay... After reading threads bashing the season so far, I think I figured out what's so off: not a single study group session in the library yet. Abed made a reference to how the show used to be about a community college in the Halloween episode last week.

After watching every episode in syndication over the past few months, gotta say that the previous seasons weren't flawless either.

A few of the episodes just went way too far "meta" last year so I'm not hugely disappointed so far this season. I like last Thursday's episode but it felt like each story segment was underdeveloped; Annie playing Mrs. Winger, Pierce/Shirley doing a focus test, Abed and crazy guy, Troy and Britta, and Jeff pretending to be an actor and flirting with a fan. Too much was really going on for there to be many jokes. I liked the episode because it was basically a Doctor Who convention, but it could have been a lot funnier.

Too bad they filmed this last Fall... Karen Gillan lives in LA now and she'd have made an awesome guest star.

Now that would have made the bit with Jeff hitting on the woman a lot better and would have been a pretty easy cameo to do.
