nah, this is my gf's drama. It's her co workers, They brought this dude out to a goodbye dinner. She just ordered a salad and a glass of wine. Everyone else went nuts with the alcohol and food. Instead of just spitting the bill, they all just threw in a 20 and told her she got the rest. She ended with a $40 bill. My gf spoke up and they all just complained saying that it is not a big deal....she has vowed never to go out to eat with anyone at her job again.
I'd pay for my part + tax/tip then tell them if it isn't that big a deal then they won't mind figuring out who owes the rest.
Yeah, she just failed at the whole exercise.
In college, I was often in charge of getting the keg. I would collect money from everyone drinking, and usually ended up pocketing some cash for my trouble. My roommate ended up having to pay $15 out of his pocket just about every time he was responsible.
Fail.
I used to work with some people who always had the same crew at lunch every day. After years they realized that the money collector ALWAYS tallied up the per person cost by dividing the bill by 5, though there were 6 people at lunch. So for years he never paid for a meal.
Not fail.

QFT! After 20+ years on the road with vaRious bands and their crews ( some of whom the term "hanger on" is kind, leech is more what I would call it) you do not pay for other's alcohol, I'll split the food if we agree beforehand, but your drinks are on you.Trick I learned in Boston after dealing with crap like that:
Separate checks.
The rest of them people can be on one check, but you can specifically ask the server to give you your own check (for example, an excuse is you have to leave earlier than them). Works every time.
