Hi

i thought should be easy but i cant get it to behave for some reason. my wife and i share a common POP3 email account; we have diff user profiles on XP.
what i would like to do is setup OE so that when either of us synchronises mail from our login, the other would be able to view it when they load OE from their login.
I have changed the default mail storage location to a common file, but despite this she can only see email she has synchronised and same with me; this would not be too much of a disaster if it wasnt for the fact that once of us synchronises, the other cannot receive that mail as well [despite also setting up the option of having the email stored on the ISP server for a few days]. We both use the "main identitity". I have noticed though that there is also a file each in the mail storage file with our respective user-names and i assume this is storing some info to keep the user profiles separate.

i can have it so that we can both see the email if one uses OE and the other outlook, but having used outlook for a few days now i have decided i want to go back to OE [it is good btu i need simple things like auto-saving ppl i reply to in my contacts and outlook doesnt do this!]

i would be grateful for all assistance on this matter.

Do what I did. Set your wife up with her own email address. Most isp's nowadays give you a few mailboxes.

I just forward anything that's sent to me that was meant for her on. It'll be a pain for a bit to get the new email out to people, but after a while it's great.

we do have multiple email addresses [mailboxes] from the same account; however when we synch mail it check the ACCOUNT [ie anyone@myaccount.com]as a whole and not for induviduals - i use message rules to do that.

as do it as you suggest, i think i would need to set up [and pay for] a separate account too and i was hoping there was another way

I'm a big fan of maintaining my own IMAP server, lots of control and no space restrictions. I have it poll my ISP's mail server periodically to get the mail from them and then it filters into the appropriate IMAP mailbox. I also have my own domain and SMTP server that I use to avoid using my ISP's mail server, but you probably don't need that.

With the right setup you could have it filter your and her mail to seperate folders or even setup public folders if you want to keep everything shared.

I personally have a Linux box running fetchmail, Cyrus IMAPd and Postfix. fetchmail gets the mail from my ISP's POP3 server and deliveres it to my local mailbox, Postfix accepts mail for my domain and allows me to send mail from my local network and Cyrus is the IMAP server. I know specifically that Cyrus supports public folders via IMAP, I can't really say about other IMAP servers. Cyrus is also the thing that does the filtering, it has a feature called sieve scripts which are server-side scripts that let you filter mail without using any client software.

Another added benefit of this is I can run Apache and IMP so that I can get to my mailbox via a webbrowser.

in the meantime i have sort-off got a fix for my original query whereby i have managed to get both logins to see the same inbox [but i have lost all my prev emails doing this:(]

i think i will have to keep a running record of who i get the most advice off in these forums....at the moment it is a running duel between nothingman and chizow:cool:
