common ion effect

Its similiar to Le Chatelier's principle. Consider weak acid HX <-> H+ + X-. If you add to the solution the salt SX, it will dissociate into S+ and X-.

The common ion is the X-, and the effect is to shift the equilibrium of HX <-> H+ + X- to the left, just like you added addition X- to the solution.
In this case, it will reduce H+.
