What do you think about this "common core" or as I call it "common crap." Everyone hates it in my new neighborhood. I was lucky enough to get out of school before Common Crap came out.

Is this "No Child Left Behind?" I'm not up to date on where Common Core comes from.

Really unsure if we needed another thread on this, I think with almost the exact same title.

TAAS was easy compared to TAKS.

And STARR(what replaced TAKS) is ridiculously harder than TAKS with some subjects only requiring 36% right to pass.

Texas is one of 3(?) states that did not adopt common core. Common Core was created by the states. The states got lobbied hard by Pearson and other educational companies to implement it(because the companies had A LOT to gain from it).

The theory behind Common Core is sound(that all states should be teaching at a minimum standard), the implementation was completely horrible and more or less lines that pockets of small number of educational companies(chiefly Pearson).

Its funny. Common Core was widely supported by both political ideologies before it was implemented, and now it is widely hated by both since it has been implemented.

I'm not against having a nationwide educational standard so long as it's a good standard.

The biggest issue people really have are the common core teaching methods. And by far the subject that gets the most attention is math, and teaching methods for math are derived from what is known as Singapore Math.

What is worth mentioning is that Singaporean students are among the best in the world when regarding math performance.

The biggest problem we have over here is that we didn't do much testing before we decided to implement radically different teachings across the country. All we have are some limited and mixed results in Kentucky schools.

Other issues also include, teachers and parents not understanding it well enough to teach it in the first place. And they aren't even trying to phase it in. Students who were being taught the "old" way for the prior school year are being now being taught the "new" way for this school year. This means they have to unlearn something and then learn it again which is highly counter productive.

What ever benefits we might reap from this are being squandered by all around piss poor implementation, and it's a recipe for disaster.

I love the idea behind CC. as you say though the implementation is shit. The ideas behind it are insane. my kids school was amazing. the kids were always 1-2 years ahead. they would score in the top 95% for state and top 90% for nation.

now with CC the kids are confused on most of the subjects. math is really fucked up.

Though i will say they haven't got any of the fucked up questions you see in the news and facebook.

I am not a backer of how CC is working.

I think there's a rift because the teachers are also not used to it. It's hard to teach something you just had to learn yourself. I think they're going to stick with it so in the future it'll probably be taught a lot better. I don't know though... haven't seen much of it because I don't have kids.

The basic ideas behind the math are very sound. The implementation, in part thanks to companies like Pearson and idiots at the state level, has been horrendous. Some of the crap that Pearson has put out in recent years is inexcusable - there are some materials that reek of incompetence and lack of oversight. It's pretty obvious that profits are more important than quality.

Nonetheless, I'm in favor of the Common Core math standards. Problems: in general, elementary teachers are inadequately prepared to teach math. If you don't understand it at a deeper level, you don't really know what it is that you're doing - it becomes more procedural than conceptual. Also, personally, I think there's an inadequate amount of emphasis on trigonometry.
