wow bunch of back peddling over this dumb statement.

?It?s important that those who consume the products being made all around the world to the benefit of America ? and it?s our own consumption activity that?s causing the emission of greenhouse gases, then quite frankly Americans need to pay for that,? Commerce Secretary Gary Locke told the American Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai.

The idea that rich-country consumers should pick up the tab for some of China?s industrial emissions has been gaining currency lately?but not from within the Obama administration. The argument is that many of China?s factories churn out cheap stuff for the West, not for domestic consumption, so those consumers are actually responsible for the emissions. China, of course, loves the idea.

Meh, this isn't going anywhere.
The idea was for a "Carbon Tarrif" (man that sounds retarded) on imported Chinese goods.
While a good idea to try and force China to clean up their factories China will simply pitch a fit, we will cave and life will go on as it has.

All business costs are ultimately figured into the price the consumer pays, so this makes sense. But really, there needs to be serious pressure for China to clean up their act. If this makes Chinese goods more expensive, all the better. It might bring some manufacturing back home.

We'll see. Obama has bigger balls on the issue than Bush, so maybe something will happen.

Carbon tariffs, cap and charade etc. -its all a scam to rape the country for money, power etc. Everywhere you look in the gov there is another headcase popping up with staggeringly stupid ideas .

I'm all for this provided it is only the Chinese who is collecting the tax and that the tax is used exclusively for Chinese environmental concerns.

Wrong. Oblama has no balls to stand up to his Democratic congress (Pelosi & Reid et al.).

We should impose a tax on other countries who import our food exports in order to buy carbon offsets for the pollutiont caused by the farming and transportation we have to endure. Get real...

The only thing he can really do is raise the price that US consumers pay for goods made in China, India, etc which is darn near everything the US consumer buys. Who do you suppose this will impact the most the rich or everyone else?

It could potentially make it cost effective to manufacture some of those goods in the US which would create jobs but it would still result in the avg. US consumer having less purchasing power.

I am not aware of anything stopping them from imposing the tax themselves right now.

No the problem was never with Bush not having the balls to go head to head with the Chinese, it was mostly with Congress, and with there not really being that big of a reason to. I just thought it was funny that someone was trying to claim that Obama has "bigger balls" on any foreign affairs issue than Bush. I mean really.

Agreed, if their environmental concerns meant that much to them, they would be taking care of it. Most likely this tax proposal is merely meant to enrich OUR tax coffers and would offer not a single benefit for its alleged purpose in the first place.

But then again, it would be another fine example of the regressive taxation the lefties will have imposed on their base, exposing the lie that lefties care for the poor and middle class. I'm somewhat conflicted.

I should actually cut Obama some slack, since pretty much no one has balls to deal with China. Maybe some Tibetans and Uighurs have the balls in some futile attempt to counter China, in which case they will get pwned because the rest of the world has no balls to say no to China.

How about all the other nations of the world pay taxes to the US to offset the carbon emissions generated while we produced aircraft, financial services, media and intellectual property, food, etc.
