Before you write me off as a rightwing "redneck", know that I am an Indian American. Not Muslim, but of the persuasions of eastern thought (buddhism, hinduism)
Propaganda is occuring on both sides. While the media is replete with rabble-rousings and provocation for the American people, there are just as many who are spouting the usual Anti-American rhetoric seemingly in order to provide some sort of justification for the attack we endured.
Although a war will inevitably result in the deaths of innocents, the reality of war can't be put aside because of that.
America has indeed committed many atrocities - this is what ALL countries do. Why is America expected to hold some higher standard than everyone else? Is this not simply affirming the belief that America is indeed a "better" country than any other? Why must America be held responsible both for its action ("look at how American did this..") and its inaction ("Why didn't America help them when...").
It is a love/hate relationship - the world likes to breastbeat the justifications for their hatred of America, but conveniently keep quiet about their love of this place. The complacency and pampering that the American public enjoys evokes not only anger around the world, but jealousy as well. Take a trip somewhere, you'll see on a small level how the spit on us, but wear our clothes and drink our drinks. Its there, people, on even that small level.
Pardon my delivery, but so what if America dropped a bomb on the Japanese? The Japanese spent ten odd years torturing the Chinese, planting tumours and disease for scientific experimentation. The Chinese have all but destroyed the identity and sovereignty of Tibet through implantation of their own people and decimation of the native culturescape, and so on goes the atrocities of the world...
The value judgements only seem to occur on America's actions. On America's attitude. On America's.....
Why are we to be deemed as any different, and any less allowed to express anger and disgust at atrocities committed upon our land? We is our retaliation deemed unneccessary and excessive, while two planes inside our buildings, seen as an expression of frustration?
