I recently had an issue somewhat similar to yours (but with XP).

Try this, from "device manager" delete (or remove) the DvD drive then re-boot and see if it finds it correctly. If that doesnt work, then delete the controller it is on then re-boot and see if the drive becomes properly recognized.

Let us know what happens

Win 8 also seems to have an issue with hot swapping e-sata external drives on my system. They are never seen until a reboot, and I never get the "remove device" option. Worked flawlessly on Win 7. One of many reasons I went back to 7 Ultimate.

My Win8 is modded with Start8 1.03 - burning DVDs works just fine with both internal and external burners. I don't disagree with your last statement - that's why I use the Start8 mod. 🙂

I had a similar experience, too. In my case even virtual CD-ROMs (Virtual CloneCD and Alcohol 120 Virtual BD-ROM) disappeared completely, not to mention SATA and USB ones.

Reformat fixed it but that was a mystery.

Not sure it matters, but I'm using Start8 as well, and my DVD burner is listed in Explorer as DVD-RW. Drive Mgmt. shows it as such as well.

Experiment and see if it is possible to copy the DvD driver from WIN 7 and paste it into the proper place in WIN 8 then either reassign the name in Device Mgr or rename the WIN 8 driver and give the WIN 7 driver the WIN 8 name. Just do some mess'n around like that and see what happens.
