comments on zalman zm80?

hi all,

fan on my geforce 4-4200 is making whining noise. replacing it would cost ~$10 so i'm thinking of just getting the zalman zm80. wondering if anyone who has been using it can give feedback.

in addition if you could answer some of my questions:

1) is the only difference between zm80a and zm80c that the zm80c supports a fan?
2) is the fan replacable with any 80mm fan? do you have to buy zalman fan or can you just stick any fan on with screws?
3) will the zm80 be good for many videocards to come in the future? i don't want to spend $30 on a gpu hs if it's only good for cards today (shoot i only spend $20 on an sk7 for athlon)
4) any problems with the weight of the zalman?

 

The C version is only 325 grams as opposed to about 400 with the a version.
And the C version comes with stabilizer brackets that join both plates. Safer to move computer.
And I believe you can put a fan on either one.

bumping for more comments, and mostly to get this question answered:

i was looking at the heatsink in store and couldn't see how the fan would screw into the heatsink (there were no pre-drilled holes)

yeah, i know that's the normal fan that goes with the heatsink, but i'm wodering if it's possible to attach any 80mm fan

Take an extra slot cover, drill a hole on the end and bend it. Get a screw and a nut to secure the fan, and then suspend the fan blowing on your card. That's if you buy the older ZM80A, there's no screw holes to attach a fan on it. Cheaper alternative if you already have an 80mm fan lying around.

hahahaha, awesome. but you don't get vibrational noise? it doesn't need to be tightly secured?
