I am building a Red Hat 9 based Fileserver... just wondering if any of you linux guys might know of any incompadabilities and other reccomendations or additions/subtractions to my list.

Yeong Yang YY-0221 (Black Mini-Cube) http://store.yahoo.com/directron/yy0221bk.html
AMD XP 2000+ (Retail)
Asus A7X8X (DDR 400 model) http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=13-131-455
Crucial 512 MB DDR2700 http://www.crucial.com/store/partspecs.asp?imodule=CT6464Z335
4 x 36 inch Rounded Cables (for easier HD runs) http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?description=12-104-616
HighPoint RAID Card http://www.knowledgemicro.com/detail.php?p=HI-R404&c=pw
4x120 Western Digital Hard Drives (Special Edition)
4x200 Western Digital Hard Drives (non Special Edition, I think)

Both the hard drive arrays have already been purchased so those cant be changed.... as for the RAID, anybody have experince with running 2 arrays on one card (even though it says it can support multiple arrays Im still a bit leary of getting this card). What about DDR3200 vs the 2700 which I have now (its 83 bucks compared to 70). I wont be using a Barton core so I dont see a need to get 3200 now but if people think it will end up being better let me know. Also what about ECC ram, can the ASUS take advantage of the ECC capabilities of the ram (would be better for a sever I think). As for fans, the case doesnt come with any so I am going to add some of my own. What are some good cheap ones that provide good cooling. Noise is no issue to me as this will be located in a server room where there are 100 other fans going at the same time. Any other comments/suggestions please let me know (I'm planning to order in less than a week).

1) I have the A7N8X deluxe edition and had trouble getting some of the onboard features to work under Linux. This was about 3 months ago, so they might have included support for the onboard now.

2) Get the PC3200 RAM, it's worth it. And I don't think the mobo can use the ECC RAM.

3) If noise isn't an issue, any Delta fans are good. They're screamers, so its better if they're out of earshot.

Hope this helps!

Ok Im not going to use the integrated NIC probably (I have 2 intel 100Pro managment adapters that Im going to load balance on). Sound would be nice but is not necessary for a server.

EDIT: Wheres a good place to get fans from? I was gonna do newegg but they want 5 bucks shipping per fan and thats just stupid.

No Radeon 9800 Pro?

Just kidding.

The YY-Cube is a small case. Much smaller than it looks. I was looking at it when I was buying my new case. I bought a Codegen S-201 for $202 shipped. It's very nice, so you might want to look at it.

As for ECC support, I chose it on crucial.com's recommendation thing and it only shows it supporting non-ECC memory.

I would also go for the PC3200. If you find out that you do need to upgrade to a Barton later on, that's one less thing you'll have to buy.

Other than picking Debian over RH, that's all I can recommend :)

I'd splurge on a very powerful PSU from a top-quality maker for that system; better too much than not enough :)

I thought max was 24". Either way, I dont think 36" is allowed.

I've got 36" ATA cables. I've never had a problem.

Might be working ok... but in a server application you don't want something that "will probably work"

arod... I'd go with the PC2700 RAM... it's not likely that you'll NEED to upgrade to a Barton for a file server anytime soon... and when you do, there will be better RAM, and it will be cheaper. Now isn't the time to plan for the future with all the new products coming out... especially for a file server.

PSU?

With that setup I'd guess you need a really good PSU, for example Antec truepower 550W
