My only concern with this lappy is that the charge time is only 1.6 hours, which kinda sucks for travelling. Other than that any other suggestions? Not interested in IBMs, HP/Compaq, or Dells.

Oops forgot the Link.

Looks like a good machine (faster than my desktop!). For battery life, check if there is a spare bay for an extra battery. You can usually get an extra battery for about $100 which will double operating time. The other thing would be looking for the PIII-M chip which trades speed for longevity when operating off battery.

Also ask at comp.sys.laptops

I can tell you right now that odds are that's a Celeron laptop and not a P-III like it says, unless a)there's a typo somewhere or b) that's a desktop P-III and not the mobile version. First tip-off was the 256KB cache; A P-III mobile has 512K, while both the Celeron Tualatin and desktop P-IIIs (I believe; they might have had 512) had 256K. Second hint was the 100MHz FSB; the P-III, mobile and desktop, have used a 133MHz bus for a long time now, and only the Celerons use a 100.

Everything else looks good except for the battery life, which you've already pointed out.

Thanks. I just read another post, and this laptop doesn't seem to cut it for battery life, and besides it is using a desktop CPU, so I will keep looking for the mobility-type cpu versions.

Go to shopper.com and read the user reviews on the notebooks. They are helpful in determining if there are problems with that model.

I would stay away from toshiba, i talked to a few people that have them, and they all said they would never buy one again. I have been searching for a laptop for college, so I have been looking at everything for the last couple of weeks. Sony seems to have some very nice ones. Check out their GR390 and the newest GRX series with the huge 16.1" display. I know you don't want anything compaq, but I got to looking at their laptops, and their newest high-end laptop is well featured and well priced (presario 2800). The user reviews on cnet were all great too. Go to compaq's website and customize one, they are very customizable for a laptop. You can put the slowest mobile P4 1.4ghz and save ~$250 from the 1.6. They even let you upgrade the video card ram to 64 from 32 (its a Radeon 7500 mobility!). When I got done customizing mine, it came out right at $2000, this includes 802.11b wireless card and everything, except the ram, I would buy the upgrade from crucial to save a few bucks.

In fact, anand just did a review on this laptop, go chack it out because its the fastest laptop they have reviewed ever.

That notebook you see there is indeed a Pentium III. Notice that there were Pentium III and Pentium III-M models. The latter came with a 133Mhz FSB and 512K L2 cache. The processor in the Toshiba is the former. It's a great machine I read. It's also a matter of 0.18 Vs 0.13 microns.

I myself however am into buying a Sony GRX, so you may want to take a look too before buying.
