Comments on this build?

Hi...

I selling my current PC and buying a new one. I use it mainly for gaming so am looking for best performance. I have left prices off as I am in the the UK but am not looking to spend loads here.

What I am intending to buy:

1 x Liteon 16x48 DVD OEM LTD163-01VHC
1 x SOLTEK SL-75DRV2 Socket A ATX Audio ATA100 3 x DDR - May change to DRV4 for ATA133 support
1 x IBM Deskstar 60GXP 60GB IDE 8.5ms 7200rpm - What is the reliability on these like now?
1 x AMD ATHLON-XP 1800+ Socket A 266MHz FSB Processor
1 x Soundblaster 5.1 Live OEM Sound Card
1 x Mitsumi 4809TE-OEM 24x12x40
2 x 256MB DDR PC2100 RAM
1 x Coolermaster DP5-6I31C Socket A Cooler upto 1.4GHz Athlon & XP 1900+
1 x Cheap case

I already have a monitor and the GFX card will be a GF4Ti4600 - when they come out over here.

What do you think? Would you change anything?

I would probably go with the IBM 120GXP hd or maybe even the D740 Maxtor drive. The 120GXP seems like a faster and better drive so far and the Maxtor is a better price for performance. I have the Soltek 75DRV4 mobo and it's pretty nice, hehe I'm biased though. For a sound card I would go with the Audigy OEM cause it takes up less cpu resources from your system. The Mitsumi cdr seems like a nice drive from what I've heard. Why not get a retail AMD Athlon XP if you don't decide to overclock. That way you have a longer warranty and it is as good of a hsf with it as the Coolermaster. If you get a cheap case, make sure you get a good quality power supply that is suggested by AMD. The psus become really important now with the requirements of these machines.

For a few £ more it seems daft not to go for the Soltek V4 and Maxtor combo to get ATA 133 - I guess you bought it for the same reason? Also, although the IBM drive is probably fine now I would just be waiting for it to go bang

The place that I am buying the bits from doesnt sell the retail XP CPU packs but I am planning to overclock it anyway.

I have looked at the Audigy but that costs 1/3 more than the SB Live. I would only use it for gaming, not editing. Would I notice the difference?

I will also check to see if the PSU is AMD approved and will change to one that is if needed.
