My uncle asked me to put together a new computer for him which is going to be used primarly for video editing (on a hobby basis) and a little bit of gaming. It should also be able to last at least a couple of years. So far I've come up with this:

AMD T-Bird 1,2GHz "C"
MSI K7T Turbo-R
512MB PC133 RAM
Maxtor DiamondMax 40+ (Two of these running in Raid 0)
ATI Radeon All In Wonder
Plextor PlexWriter PX-W1210TA Internal Retail
Samsung SyncMaster 900NF
The cheapest floppy drive available :)

Keyboard and mouse will be something wireless from Logitech and the case will just be a miditower with a 300W PSU. He also want a DVD drive but I know nothing about that so what should I get? I also need a low noise cooler. Is the Radeon the best buy for his needs or should I get him something different?

TIA

Sounds like you are putting together a world class computer! The Asus A7V133 seems to be a popular choice along with that MSI. Also what are you using for RAM (brand name)?

Is he doing professional video editing? If so you might want to look into a higher end card, if it's just home stuff/hobby stuff you should be fine with that card.

As far as DVD drives go, the Pioneer 16x or Toshiba 12x are both excellent drives for playback quality.

For a very low noise cooler, you can look into an Adda 2500 rpm CPU fan. Couple this with a hedgehog or Alpha PAL6035 heatsink and you should have a good cooling solution.

Seems like a pretty good system for video editing, plenty of CPU power RAM and HD space with an AIW Radeon to boot. :)

I've been thinking about the Asus board as well but the MSI is a bit cheaper. The RAM will properly be Apacer.

I'll try and find some reviews of the DVD drives and see what's best.

Since he's only doing it as a hobby I guess the Radeon is good enough but in what shape are the Windows 2000 drives for this card? Are they stable?

He also needs a scanner. Any suggestions?

Hey Postman, just to give you a headsup check out the forums at

http://www.rage3d.com/

Make sure you know EVERYTHING there is about the All in Wonder, I hear that there are issues up the yin yang with that board. Otherwise, those are some kick ass components in there although I'd go with 2 IBM 75gxp 45 gigs considering the fact that their price has dropped to about the same as the Maxtors.

i concur. i have the radeon aiw...great hardware, terrible drivers = bad buy for now. most common opinion is that it does everything good enough but nothing really well.

The 45GB gxp is actually a bit cheaper than the 40GB diamondmax+ but the diamondmax+ should be both a little bit faster and a little bit less noisy which is why I chose them over the gxp. Besides that theres all these "horror stories" about gpx's dying after a short period of time and with my usual luck I would properly get two bad drives...

I'll check out the rage3d forums later but if I decide against the Radeon what GeForce should I get? Any brands better than others for video editing?

Fine choice of monitor :)

I would swap the drives for two IBM 75GXPs though.

Also, what memory do you intend on putting in it?

MCS,

Two 256MB Apacer modules. Thats what my usual dealer gives me and I never had any problems with it. And yes, the monitor rocks :)
