maybe getting this instead :

Toshiba A505-S6035 for $550

If you will use it for what you wrote above and ocasional gaming, that laptop is a much better deal!

Now... if you do serious gaming above 1680*1050 buy the desktop and swap the ATI 5570 for a 5770 or an even better GeForce 460GTX and enjoy the games :)

someone else got that laptop, i am trying to get a core i3 dell studio 1749 instead, which has a radeon 5650 is that okay for games?

It depend what you think ''OK'' is... if you dont mind playing 1024*768 or even 1280*1024 medium detail, then, yes... it will be ok for games.

Every processor\graphics card is usually much slower than its desktop counterpart, what I mean is an laptop i3 is much slower than a desktop i3, same goes for the graphics card.

i dont mind playing on 800x600 on low lol :) as long as the games work...
mostly my last pc had a hard time playing risen as soon as i got out of the beginning fog and couldnt play gothic 4 at all...

Then go with the laptop, I just recently saw CoD BO run decently on a toshiba c2d with a 5470! F1 2010 runs decently at 1024*768 medium detail and the 5650 is better card than the 5470, also i3 is better than a c2d.

The only problem I have with that is the 5570. It isn't very likely you'll be playing games on that...
