command prompt window doesn't close

has anyone seen this behavior before? when i close a command prompt window it just hangs there. the process is gone but you can still see it running in applications. this seems to occur randomly (sometimes the window will close fine and others it won't). It doesn't seem to matter if I close it by hitting X or typing exit. This becomes annoying because it prevents the machine from powering down without doing a hard reset.

I am having the same issue. I am running windows XP fully patched. It started about 6 months ago at what I thought were random times but now is happening almost once a day. I use the command prompt a ton and will post more if I notice any patterns. The really annoying thing is the only way I've found to get rid of the window is to do a hard Shutdown of my workstation.
