Generals is a lot of fun and as you will note there are a few of us that like it quite well. Let us know how you like it or not like it.

I will.

Company of Heroes is ahead on my RTS list, but I'll throw in CC:Generals one of these days and give it whirl.

C&C 1 was the best game of the series, in my oppinion. C&C 3 was pretty good too, but it may be a little confusing if you haven't played the original. The second game (C&C 2, not Red Alert) had one of the strangest storylines I have seen in a game, and I couldn't force myself to finish it.

Red Alert was the sequel to the original C&C (Tiberian Dawn I believe). It has nothing to do with the tiberian series, other than both series have Kane in them. Red Alert is an alternate reality where Einstein develops a time machine and kills Hitler before he gets into power, and a war starts between Stalin's Russia and the rest of Europe (so WW2 without Nazis). It is a fun game in it's own right, but the units have been made far more alike than in the original.

They're supposedly releasing Red Alert 4 next spring so your timing is good. C&C as a franchise was excellent at the time and partially responsible for a lot of what is good in current RTS games. However, I don't think the older titles provide much value over newer titles unless you're curious why many consider C&C1 one of the top 10 most influential PC games.

Personally, I'd recommend Supreme Commander (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/pc/supremecommander?q=supreme commander) over C&C3. I thought it was simply much more fun.

I'd recommend Total Annihilations over Supreme Commander.

On C&C - I preferred the Red Alert games over the C&C games - tongue in cheek storyline, fun.

Tiberium Wars wasn't that well received, you might get turned off to C&C.

Maybe Red Alert 2 is a place to start.
