Sony is following in Nintendo’s footsteps and bringing back its original PlayStation console nearly 25 years after its initial release as a miniature gaming device called the PlayStation Classic, the company announced today. The device will cost $99.99 ( €99.99 / 9,980 yen / £89.99) and, similar to Nintendo’s NES and SNES Classic consoles, will come pre-loaded with 20 “genre-defining” titles, including Final Fantasy VII, Tekken 3, and Ridge Racer Type 4. The device will launch globally on December 3rd.

Now this looks very cool, i'll probably pick one up (if they don't sell out).

I would want a Dual Shock controller. They're probably analyzing market response to determine the rest of the game list.

I like this, but I agree regarding their choice for the controller. The Dual Shock was simply better than the original base controller (3D games started to pop up and controlling in a 3D environment on all axis with a D-Pad wasn't the best thing in the world). I can understand that they went with the nostalgia factor there, representing the absolute original release (hence that controller choice) but I would have definitely preferred a Dual Shock. However, it's true... the Dual Shock was a bit bigger, and two of them would maybe be too 'big' for something that's supposed to be 'miniaturized'. Dunno.

Anyway, I'm still happy to see this happen. Oh and I actually like the price, there's 20 games there and even though we don't have the full list yet, if anyone were to try to buy them all separately (eBay or whatever) it'd most likely cost way more than that (and no, not everyone likes or wants to use emulators).

Now all we need is an official SEGA Genesis Classic, Saturn Classic, Dreamcast Classic (that one would be great), and if somehow Nintendo manages to do it, a Nintendo 64 Classic. Heh, and while we're at it, why not a TurboGrafx Classic too? I mean, might as well; Atari 2600 / NES / SNES and now PS1, let's just continue and re-make them all.

My guess is that the miniature parallel port cover has been repurposed to cover a card slot and they will be selling what is essentially an SD card along with a Dual Shock controller, and probably split two volumes to encourage you to buy two bundles and spend way more to justify 2-players.

Sega just announced today that AtGames is off the Genesis/Megadrive Mini and it has been delayed to 2019. This is good news.

There are some options for 2600. The Atari Flashback series essentially started this craze many years ago. The Atari Flashback 2+ is hardware-based and can be equipped with a cartridge port if you are handy, but it’s composite video only. It isn’t made by AtGames like the later Flashback consoles, which is a good thing.

The Retron77 uses Stella (emulation) but works with original 2600 (and 7800?) carts. It has HDMI and has even had some involvement from the author of Stella (he fixed some of the glitches from their older port).

It makes me feel old that the Playstation 1 is now considered retro. 25 years. Wow.

Doesn't it huh? You and me both (and plenty others). I still remember when I first rented the PS1 (before I could afford to buy one), I could barely contain my excitement. I had only seen glimpses of it on TV (ads, not many of them though) and in gaming magazines prior to that. I rented Assault Rigs with the console that day, went back home and clearly recall that I thought I was holding a 'machine from the future' in my hands when I got that thing out of the box. I had a blast with the game, too (Assault Rigs really ain't bad at all, pretty decent puzzle-solving game with Tron-style visuals). Even my father at the time was briefly interested by what was on the screen (that's saying a lot; he never liked video games).

Indeed, it's crazy to think that it all happened nearly 25 years ago (that's sort of feeling like a punch to the gut from Time itself). I got my PS1 finally in the summer of 1997, but started to rent it every now and then starting around mid 1995. Basically the same happened with the NES and SNES Classics (I.E. reminding me of my age, ...ty Nintendo), since I still remember the very day I got both of them (got my NES as a holidays present in late holiday season 1991, and got my SNES in early summer vacation of 1993 during my middle high school years). And in a relatively short amount of time from now, next year in September what will I be saying and talking about? That the Dreamcast turns 20 years old already (and SEGA better take that opportunity to give us a Dreamcast Classic). It's... just insane.

Glad to hear Wild Arms is coming to it. That's an immediate purchase for me. I'm really hoping to see Colony Wars, Tony Hawk 2 and SotN.

It ain't retro unless I can connect it to my boob-tube television with less than Component video input.

I can't imagine being able to license all that amazing music from THPS2 for the price Sony would be willing to pay, and no way I could play that game without Guerilla Radio.

For me the absolute musts are:

1. Castlevania SoTN
2. Metal Gear Solid
3. Silent Hill
4. Suikoden II

And then the games I'd really like to see are Final Fantasy IX, Suikoden, Xenogears, the two Lunar games, Persona 2 Eternal Punishment, Revelations Persona, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Breath of Fire III and IV. An English translation of Persona 2 Innocent Sin would be amazing too, though I imagine they'd edit Hitler out of it lol. I could live without Crash Bandicoot or Spyro since I already have the Crash remasters on PC and will probably buy the Spyro ones a few months after launch when they come down in price.

Link? That would be great news.

Part of the news that it was delayed until 2019. Searching “Genesis Mini,” it’s difficult to even find the earlier announcement since everyone is talking about the latest announcement.

Alternatively, it may end up being PSTV hardware, which pairs with SIXAXIS/Dual Shock 4 and already has a proprietary card slot for expanding games.

Price is in line with that.

Do you know what this actually meant? I think someone told me once but now that you bring it up I forget what they were trying to say with that slogan.

http://www.playstationlifestyle.net/2012/03/01/the-history-of-playstation-ads-psone/

Their first commercial ended with the highly confusing tagline “[E]NOS Lives”. The red E being a play on words meaning ‘ready’. Leaving the letters ‘NOS’ to stand for the ninth of September, which was the release date for the PlayStation One.

Following the release of the PSOne, Sony transitioned their E campaign to “UR NOT E“. Telling their audience that they were not ready for the power of the PlayStation.

Final Fantasy 7 has been reissued many times and remade for Windows a couple times. Its nothing special.
The remake for PS4 is maybe worth looking forward to.

BUT, if they had put Symphony of the Night on this bastard it would sell faster than bottled water at an all night rave.

Yep, SotN and compatible with my DS4's and we'd be set. Then again I'm still buying this just for Wild Arms.
