ok, so i've got a sore throat (mild) and a cough (mild except for sometimes it becomes one of those where once you cough, it triggers another, and another, and another...) and a stuffy nose... and when i wake up in the morning, my throat is BURNING...

so drink lots of water and get lots of rest, rite? i am drinking lots of water, i am getting lots of sleep... but here's the thing, i'm still playing basketball like 2-3 hours a day... i've stopped lifting for a bit... but i don't want to lose any muscle weight while i'm sick... is there any way to do this...? i'm trying to eat regularly... (don't have a scale, so i dunno if i'm actually losing or if i'm just worried)

thanks in advance

when you feel the urge to cough, attempt not to do so. just clear your throat.

as for losing muscle mass. do push-ups and crunches

uh, a week without lifting shouldn't matter too much.

have you ever noticed tho... when you're sick... you come back a week or 2 later, and you're just... smaller... and not as strong, and weigh like 10 pounds less...?

Buy some quality Whey protein powder and drink three shakes a day. You're not getting enough protien in your diet, it sounds like.

I took a couple weeks off when I went skiing, and then got sick with a nasty cold. I maintained my calorie and protein intake the whole time, and only lost two lbs. But get this: I made signifigant gains on the weights my first week back. Needless to say, I was very pleased 🙂

Sometimes a break from the weights can be a good thing. Especially if you've been overtraining.

about the break, i know... it's great for lifting... but does it work the same w/ being in good cardio shape...?

2-5grams of asc.ac. (vitamin c) 400-800 milligrams of NAC (N-acetyl Cysteine) and rest... eat more than usually if you are not afraid to gain a couple of hundred grams of fat...

And it is not the end of the world, the weight lost will be regained within a week...

Yup, sometimes the body needs to rest, you usually get sick when the body has had enough... that forces you to rest...

I played division 1 college basketball, and like you when I got sick I still had to do 2-3 hours of basketball a day, along with weights, school, and the whole schebang.

Here is what I suggest:

1. Fluids. You need to keep drinking fluids, all day long. Literally, when you pee it should look like water. (Sorry to be descriptive, but trust me on this).

2. Foods. Just like the old saying, starve the flue, feed a cold. You need to eat. Not only should you consume your normal caloric intake, I would recomend increasing it during the time you are sick.

Now, as for your training. You didn't mention, but if you HAVE to keep playing basketball, then do so. If not, I recommend a break from both basketball and weights for a day or two to rest.

Taking a week off of weight training will not lead to a loss in weight. If you do notice any significant weight loss after being sick for a few days, the vast majority if it is simply water.

Also, if you don't regularly take them I would recommend serious vitamins with antioxidants and all the good stuff. I still take them daily (the packs have like 10 vitamins in them), and when I'm getting sick I take 2 packs a day. You should try it, keeps you healthy while many other people who play sports as often are always fighting the "neverending cold" 🙂

Good luck. 🙂

It doesn't hurt cardio fitness much at all as long as it's just a week or two. Just remember to work your way back into training more slowly than you think you'll have to. Overtraining is worse than undertraining... and it takes a HELL of a lot longer to overcome.
