Comic buffs need a bit of help

Well I was a pretty hardcore marvel fan growing up, so I read most of the mini-series: secret wars I & II all the way upto Onslaught and I even stuck around for a year of the new issues after onslaught.

My question to you: Is there anything comparable mini-series wise in the DC universe? I heard something about infinity crisis? At the moment I'm just looking for a good ole fashion mini-series that'll keep my entertained for a bit on my upcoming vacation. Maybe something in a graphic novel.

Infinite Crisis was ok, but I think it's the closed compared to marvel.

there are other great series though, like Kingdom Come, some of the Batman series like The long halloween, and also Justice right now is pretty good.

My threads always fail for some reason ; ;.

However I'm poking around the Batman Hush series, and picking up the Kingdom come series aswell. The long halloween has the scarecrow in it doesn't it? I was never a fan of him.

you looking for strictly super hero stuff? otherwise, the Vertigo/Wildstorm line of DC has awesome stories.
pm me for details.

Kingdom Come is probably the best DC miniseries you'll ever find. The sequel, Kingdom, was decent but the ending felt weak to me.

Infinite Crisis just finished up last month, and was rooted in the 80's miniseries Crisis on Infinite Earths. CoIE is basically the event in DC history, but if you don't know much about the universe in general, it's probably a bit much to jump into.

The Watchmen was published by DC, but isn't really a DC product; it's in its own 'universe.'

There's a bunch of good Superman minis and GNs; Birthright redoes his origin to include a few Smallville elements (which isn't nearly as bad an idea as you might think), Secret Identity is about a kid in the 'real world' who somehow gets Superman's powers and shows how he acts in different life stages, and Red Son is Superman if he'd landed in Communist Russia.

Also, the recent Lex Luthor: Man of Steel is a Superman mini written from Lex's perspective, with Luthor truly believing Superman is a demonic vanguard for an alien invasion

I was particularly fond of the Quiver story arc with Green Arrow written by Kevin Smith. The story ran through 15 books I believe and then Kevin stayed on for a few more issues after that. Not bad reading.

Any of the Green Lantern stuff is a winner in my book too. Rebirth came out not too long ago and featured the return of Hal Jordan. Decent stuff.

Have a good trip

I'd recommend "Crisis on Infinite Earths" to those not familiar with the DC universe. It's available in trade paperback.

Rebirth is when the 2nd green lantern returns right? Not as Green lantern but paralax?
Rebirth is where Hal Jordan returns; he's the one that had become Parallax. The mini explains why he became Parallax, why he became the Spectre, and leads into why the Spectre went batsh!t and did some of the things he did in the buildup to Infinite Crisis. It also features the return of at least one other person to the GL ranks.

I HATED DC growing up.

but Kindom come, Infinite crisis and some of the batman series were great. Batman was the only DC comic i enjoyed reading (at times)

Is there more than one of series with "Come" in the title? Kingdom Come is one right, is there another? I'm kinda confused.

Yes, Rebirth is over with. It had to finish before Infinite Crisis so that Hal would be available and the Spectre would be free to go insane.

I would imagine there's more than one mini that uses the word "Come," but I can't think of any others published by DC. From them, I can only remember Kingdom Come and the sequel Kingdom.

I would think that Batman: The Dark Knight Returns and/or Batman: Year One would be the best places to start as well as The Killing Joke.

The Kraven mini-series that crossed over all the Spiderman books in the mid 80s was a load of garbage.
Kraven was one of my favorite Spider-man villians. I HATED what they did with him in this story. 😀

My recommendations (old school):
Marvel
Thor: Visionaries: Walt Simonson
Fantastic Four: Visionaries: John Byrne - first 3 volumes
Daredevil: Visionaries: Frank Miller: volumes 2 and 3, NOT the first 1. This was before FM went insane or started recycling stories by way of Sin City
X-Men - Dark Phoenix Saga

Printed by DC (sort of), but not in the DC universe.
Top 10 - very cool. It's basically a police procedural in a city of nothing but people with super-powers and costumes. Very very funny, as well as dark and dramatic. There's nothing like a 100 feet tall, overweight lizard who's falling down drunk.

DC
Orion - the Gates of Apokolips. A CRIMINALY underrated series by Walt Simonson. They only have one trade paperback, leaving most of the series uncollected.
Swamp Thing - Saga of the Swamp Thing, Love and Death, the Curse, and a Murder of Crows - best if you read them in that order
Teen Titans: The Judas Contract, the Terror of Trigon

There's a trade called something like "Alan Moore and the DC Universe". It collects some of his rarer Green Lantern stories, the Killing Joke, Whatever happened to the Man of Tomorrow, and a few other of his stories."

Spider-Man:
The Origin of the Hobgoblin is long out of print, but see if your local comic store has a copy - it's very good.

Yes, but those ones are wrapped in brown paper and they keep them on the top shelf 🙂

Heh, if you thought the Kraven mini-series sucked, you'll hate to see what they did to Kraven in the Ultimate universe.
