Seeing the teaser for the new live-action Hulk film coming out has taken me back to a question i never really could figure out... exactly what niche does the Hulk fit into? He's certainly hard to describe as a super-hero (no Clark Kent goody-twoshoes) and doesn't exactly fit into the super-villan category either (not like he's trying to take over the world or something). IMHO, his character is one of the more complex and interesting ones in comics... a multiple personality disorder character, who unleashes the monster inside himself as he creates a horrifying new weapon of war, with the only upper limit to his power being the level of rage he can manage. Still, i kind of didn't know quite how to classify the Hulk as a character... a "super-hero" that is routinely described as sort of a force of nature like a tornado and leaves destroyed cities in his wake? That doesn't seem to make much sense...

Well, in his comic he's been a little of everything. I haven't read his comic lately but I know back in the eighties there was a period of time where he was actually stuck as the Hulk and could not turn back into Bruce Banner. He even retained his human personality and intelligence. So he was a Super Hero at that time. But, orginally he was thought of as a "Frankenstein" type monster. Misunderstood and feared by most people. He'd only attack someone if they attacked him first. I think the Movie will probably portray him that way.

It depends on which hulk he is. (yes, there are different degrees of the hulk)

Seeing as how the hulk is the manifestation of Bruce Banners inner weakness (its been revealed that the Gamma Radiation that gave Banner the hulk powers just empowers you with what you wish you could have. Banner wanted to be big, strong, and able to get out his anger. He was a nerd his whole life and was never able to do this. Doc Sampson wanted to be big, strong, but didnt have the pent up rage of banner, so he was much more normal, She Hulk wanted to be a beautiful woman, etc......) the argument could be made that the wild hulk, when banner loses all control, is a force of nature. Neither good, nor bad, just pure, unrestricted anger. The scientist hulk, when banner "hulks out" but retains full control, is almost always a super-hero. Only once has he been in the capacity of villan, and then, so were the rest of the defenders (silver surfer, doc strange, Namor, and hulk are the defenders). Joe Fixit, the grey hulk, was pretty much a villan. Very very intellegent, slightly less strong than wild hulk, but banner had forgotten who he was, and Joe Fixit became involved with organized crime, even becoming a crime boss.

Joe Fixits my favorite. he had the most style ;)

edit: Those are not the only degrees of the hulk, mind you. theres War Hulk, and Devil Hulk who are both evil. There are others, but I cant remember them off the top of my head........

edit 2: yes, I have way to much time on my hands. I know this, yet I dont know how to fix it
