I loves me my Rockports. In terms of something that isn't going break the average budget, I'd say they're the best.

My father has gone through several shoes and after trying Rockport and ECCO, he has settled for ECCO. They are $$$ but worth it for him.

I wear Timberlands b/c they are tough and can stand roughness and are comfortable enough for me. If I really want the comfortable shoes, then it will be ECCO for me also.

Rockports may be comfortable, but don't last. I had a pair of Rockports that I replaced in less than 1 year, and they were uncomfortable after 6 months. My current Clarks are at least 4 years old and are still quite comfortable.
