Comet in the night sky? Who can confirm?

Hi there,

I'm in Ottawa right now... tonight, as I looked at the sky for the first signs of Hurricane Isabel - large clouds - , I saw much to my surprise, right at the zenith, that there's a large, nebulous mass, quite bright. It can't be the moon. I tried to look t it through binoculars, but there's not much detail.

Is anyone among you in the Northern United States or Lower Canada who can confirm that there's some large astral body above us? I looked on all the news sites and there's nothing related to any comet visitig us.

If you have a clear patch of sky, look up, in a circle of about 10 degrees from your local vertical, and tell me if you see anything.

The earth is round.... therefore, where it is in the sky will depend on the latitude, longitude, and time of viewing...
Personally, all I see are a bunch of clouds that everyone seems to be over-reacting to. (western NY - schools are closed... they expect (gasp!) 3 inches of rain)

I'm thinking people in the NE of the US, and Canadians from Ontario to Nova Scotia should be able to see the phenomenon...

No, unfortunately all I see is long streaks of clouds... Isabel will be upon us tonight.

I was able to barely see Mars earlier on - this thing that looks like a comet appeared to be about a quarter of the sky to the south of Mars - that meant right above my head, about one hour ago.

*goes outside*
*looks up*
*doesn't see anything other than a few stars and a cloud or two*
