I'm getting crazy VMM errors like I never did before. My FAT table crashed yesterday and I've to reinstall WinME. While installing, the system crashed with a blue screen stating VMM something. I got pissed and reinstalled it. Then everything was fine. Installation was smooth and all. Then now, I'll just get that VMM error unexpectedly and things wil just go haywire. I won't get to boot into windows after that unless I reset my BIOS. This has never happened before!

Has this anything to do with Virtual memory?? I've set it to 256Mb as max and 0Mb as min. I would really LOVE TO KNOW WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG!

There was a problem with the IBM 75GXP drive and windows and high speed athlon chips. Basically, the drive was too fast or something and what was cached wasn't being saved. Anyway there is a patch for it, should be on the IBM website. Do a search in the forums it was a popular discussion maybe a month or so back.

Good luck

I've installed the patch. It's still happening. What's VMM anyway?? VIrtual memory??

Anybody with a better solution?

I also had these errors (not soooo bad though). Running TuneUp 97 and Norton Win Doctor mostly solved the problem.

I would set the virtual memory to 128 Mb min and 256 Mb MAX. That should be OK.

Are U sure that your RAM is OK?? Tried different sticks?

I made some settings on the SYSTEM.INI. Placed a line where it'll use the physical memory first rather than the virtual memory. THen I changed my settings to 128 Mb and 256 Mb for virtual mem. I'm sure the RAM sticks are good as this did not happen to me at all bnefore the system crash yesterday.

If you are talking about the ConservativeSwapfileUsage=1 line added to the 386Enh, I have mine setup that way in 98SE. I just checked the box to allow Windows to manage the Virtual Memory settings, and I do not even have a swapfile showing on my drive. That is confirmed by Norton Speed Disk also. When I defrag with NSD, no swapfile is present. I have not used up my RAM to the point that a swapfile has started. I would suggest that you try that.

I've checked that I do not use the Virtual memory on my drive at all. The total that I always hit is 120Mb of physical memory used.

When you reinstalled Windows, did you install it over the old copy? That could be your problem, you may need to do a fresh install, delete your windows folder and try again...

Also, it is possible that the RAM is bad, contrary to popular belief, RAM can stop working or go bad or whatever, I had it happen to me. Fortunately almost all RAM is covered by a lifetime warranty so I was ok.

How could it be? It was good an hour before? I did a fresh install. Is there anyway to test the RAM?

pillage2001,it could be anything ,faulty hardware etc,the reason I say that is I had a rock stable system for 6 weeks & suddenly started getting BSOD,VM error,Windows protection error, lockups etc, anyway mine got worst with booting problems even trying to reinstall OS was hell, & it turned out it was my CPU gone faulty, btw I also thought it was memory but I was wrong there.

All I can suggest is you take your PC down to a good repair shop & let them run a full diagnostic on it to find the exact cause.

:)

I had a problem like this.... It kept BSOD and VMM and everything.... I formatted and reinstalled it STILL did it..... And I couldnt figure it out.... I did a Low Level Format and it worked after that..... Still havent figured that one out except maybe a virus.

AhAHa, is it possible my God-Damn-Expensive mouse is killing it? Where do I do a low format on a A7V? I've just removed and placed all the ATA66 cable according to the cable selection. The one in the middle is for the master drive rite?

Thanx for the site Magic30
