The legendary DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist from Jurassic 5 fame got together for another album, and I went to go see them when they were in town recently. In this set they only use 45's. There were remote controlled cameras hooked up above both sets of tables to get the best view, and DJ Shadow was even wearing a camera in a wrist band to get those close up shots. Cut Chemist was using some sampling foot pedals so he could record / loop in real time. Here's the videos..

Shadow & Chemist Part 1 (lots of beat juggling)
Shadow & Chemist Part 2 (mainly scratching)
Shadow & Chemist Part 3 (good oldschool hip hop)
Shadow & Chemist Part 4 (scratching / juggling)
Shadow & Chemist Part 5 (funky)

The next DJ I saw was Mike Relm. He has this really cool DVD mixer that scratches the video / audio of a DVD. He had a couple projector screens behind him so you can see the effect.

Mike Relm Part 1 (set opener, tons of scratching / juggling)
Mike Relm Part 2 (he starts using the DVD scratcher here)
The next videos were taken on a different camera so the quality isn't as good / kind of shaky, but its taken from closer to the stage..
Mike Relm Part 3 (more DVD scratching)
Mike Relm Part 4 (RJD2 mixed with "Bang Bang" from Kill Bill)
Mike Relm Part 5 (has the O face guy at 1:15, funny stuff)
Mike Relm Part 6 (scratching over Gnarls Barkley)
Mike Relm Part 7 (more Gnarls scratching)

i saw them early on the tour and they sucked, they even admitted it.

this coming from a big fan of both and have always enjoyed their shows in the past.

They did mess up a couple times (one of them can be witnessed in the first video, right at the beginning) but I thought they did a great job otherwise. After buying the cd, the set was pretty much them recreating the disc all the way through, with some additional music thrown in there so they could set up the next tracks. I actually almost ended up not going to the show because it was sold out, but I hit up Craigslist the day of and found some tickets for me and my buddies. We got there with enough time to see about the last 10-15 minutes of Kid Koala's set, but I've seen him headline a couple times before so not a big deal.

Marked for home, sounds like an awesome show.

Those of you who like this should check out Wax Tailor, it's similar stuff and very good.

I haven't listened to the tracks that you've posted in the OP, but you think these are real DJs? What about the people that play around with electronica? From what you've posted in the OP, it seems that all these guys do is scratch.

I find turntablism to be alot "truer" to the spirit of dj'ing than what most electronica dj's put out

Both DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist are producers. Shadow's stuff can be found on youtube, and Chemist along with DJ Newmark produced for Jurassic 5. I don't think Relm produces, but real time manipulation of music to make new music is no easy task.

I saw KidKoala live a few years ago and he was bloody brilliant, much better than most of the electronic DJs I've seen, same goes for DJ Shadow. When they are on, it's just mind blowingly good.
