Comcast will be 4 mb/s

Nice I just got a letter from comcast. They are upping the bandwidth again on cable internet in 2005. So it will now be 4 mb/s down and 384 up. That's just for my basic cable internet service. Comcast rules.

(I live in Portland Oregon by the way. So not sure if this is everywhere but I'd imagine most places).
 
I havent gotten an email yet about it.

I get my Comcast internet cable, and digital TV cable for free, so its all good to me. 🙂
 
It's a nice improvement in speed, but still well far behind the broadband speeds that are commonly found in South Korea and Japan, where they pay roughly $25-40 a month for 20-26 megabit connections, while we pay the same for <4 megabit connections. No one was joking when people said that the U.S. is far behind in broadband technology: :roll:

Well in places like, SK and Japan, it's more profitable to roll this kind of thing out since (for example) a one mile cable run would serve many more people than it would in the US.
 
Bright house is going to 5mb on Jan 1. Something about improvement in the Fiber channels. I live in FL.
 
come to the UK....lol, we are really behind the times.....i think one service in a small area is just about to roll out 2mb or possibly 3mb, cant remember which, but most only offer 1mb...heh
oh, and i think that 2 or 3mb one will be around £50 a month (US$90)
 
Comcast has been 4MBPS for basic service here in utah for around 5 months =O fiber optics has been installed in my city but hasn't been activated yet =( prob gonna be another 6 months before thats activated. But its 100MBPS!
 
There are LOTS of differences between there and here. I have been to Japan and South Korea. I will explain why is vastly different there as opposed to the US.

But 1st.


1. I got the same letter from comcast. If you read the small print at the bottom of the page (at least in the letter I got (I live in MASS) there was a little footnote at the bottom of the page that said, to get 4 mps, it was an extrs $10 a month)

2. Here in Mass Verizon is installing a 30 mps DSL network in the boston and surrounding towns area. It will be ready to go in about 4-6 months.

Now onto South Korea.


South Korea -

A. Size. South Korea is about the size New England, probably a little smaller. All the large cities are near each other. Imagine trying to run fiber optic cable from New York to LA. Its not cost effective. It was much eaiser for them to wire the country than it would be for us. Also, they major cities are far more jam packed, and close together.

B. Goverment funding. Its not a capitalist society over there. The goverment was able to control, fund, and regulate the market and invest large sums of money to wire the nation.

C. Timing. Most cable in the US got laid in the 70's and early 80's. Broadband was not a thought on the radar. South Korea, most cable was laid in the 90's. Broadband was already thought of, and high speed fiber was laid to START with.

D. Income. Avg income there is about 60% of the US. Its all about what the market can bare. If they were to price it at $50 or more, no one would be able to afford it. But with goverment funding, handling the initial cost of laying the fiber and installing, companies dont have to recoup that start up costs.

So comparing us to them, without the facts, doesn't give a clear picture.

well when i lived in sacramento, CA from 01-03 they had installed fiber optics in about 01. damn that fiber was freakin sweet. it was "rated" as 10Mb/s which was still insanely fast. i would only be limited by the server i was downloading from. my counterstrike ping would stay below 15ms even when playin in a server as far as new york. i would get downloads like 1.5Mb/s but obviously not every server out there has that bandwith but they had digital cable, internet, and phone over your fiber connection. i bought the whole package while it was a little expensive for the whole package, i say averaged about $80-90/month but that was with the digital cable, some movie channels, phone and internet. damn now i live here in LA and i only have a slow comcast cable line......
