Comcast Software

I don't and I'm behind a router, so unless they're using a different setup in Colorado, the answer is no.

Actually, AFAIK, they don't have any software. 😕

TBB,

If you're referring to their installation CD - DON'T run it!!! Once you register your modem with the appropriate proxy server settings configured, that's it - you're good to go.

The Comcast software is not required at all.
Using a software firewall would still be a good idea, however.

Comcast gives you software? I've been using their service since they took over for AT&T and have never installed any software.

Don't install their software. ISP-provided software has ALWAYS either broken stuff or otherwise caused headaches. I just use the stuff provided by the OS.

I've had Comcast and Brighthouse(?)/Timewarner and both of them have given me software. It's basically help/trouble shooting/repair software for the computer illiterate<sp?>

I wholeheartedly agree.

As JRez says, once you've registered your modem by stepping through their process with a fixed IP address they give you, then you'll be good to go. If you're using a router, they'll ask you to remove it for the registration process. You'll need to take the MAC address of the computer you used for registration and clone it into the router in order for it to connect to Comcast. I just went through this process with Comcast (after my account was mistakenly cancelled).

comcast's is not software per se, it does help you get your mac addy registered and going. the only change my friend saw was the little windows icon in the upper right of IE was replaced with comcast's thing. He was like you guys, hated the idea, but could not get connected by himself. He tried everything, but the cd is needed to log into secure session to get mac addy in.
Edit: he is in WA, and after he called tech support with his problems, they said, did you use CD? He said no, and they said it does little of nothing, just gets you going. He was embarrased😱

I guess different local providers might have different ways of doing things. The comcast guy came, ran some cable, made sure the modem was sending/recieving then left. I've had comcast and timewarner/bright house here in Indiana and never needed to use a CD for any purpose.

this was a self install, so that is how he got connected and authorized. Some places will not do a self installation, but this one did.
