Comcast Powerboost: faster burst speeds (12-16+Mbps)

A Comcast Tech guy came over my house today to tell me about the new high speed internet upgrades. Non cable TV subscribers like myself will be upgraded to 6Mb from previous 4Mb. Upload speeds will remain the same, however. He also told me about the new Powerboost feature that will boost your download speeds to 12Mb if your file is less than 10MB or greater than 10MB, I forget which one. A Comcast tech will need to come over next week to install these new features in our cable box.

The Comcast Tech guy was pretty cool. I asked him if there were ways to increase my upload speeds without paying for the business line, and he told me that there are firmware hacks for my modem. 😉 Then he told me that he downloads music on the internet all the time (illegal obviously). He told me that if I had any questions about my computer, I could give him a call not as a Comcast Tech.

It'd be obviously under 10MB, otherwise it wouldn't be 'boosts'. This is a farce speed upgrade, they're just bursts, nothing to brag about.

bursts still help though🙂

Boosts are better than giving people more overall speeds for Comcast.

Cause they have give people a speed increase... even though some people don't utilize it
but there has to be a gap for the customer if max speed were to be used

its kinda sad that my 27.99 dsl has better upload speeds (I have the eltie package, 6-8 mbps down/ 768 up) than comcast's 384kbps up. I used to be on comcast, downloads are great, but for lot of apps I run on my server uploads speed was limiting. Also DSL for me is sustained, comcast was a bit incosistent at times. either way my work pays for cable but still.

Actually, the boost occurs on files that are greater than 10MB. It says it in the Broadband Reports thread.

I agree, but there aren't many ISPs in my area. I'd rather sacrafice a couple download Mb for 1Mb of upload.

 my $17/month DSL (3mbps down/512 up) has higher upload speeds than comcasts most expensive package 😕

 is that $17 a month a special deal for 3 months or something, or is that your regular rate? All of a sudden DSL looks very appetizing...

That wouldn't make anysense because anything OVER 10MB would be suistained and therefore an actual 12Mb connection, not a 'burst speed'.

AT&T offers it for 1 year.

Hasn't this been around for a while? I'll download stuff from MS at like 1.5 MB/sec on a 3 way split connection that isn't supposed to get higher than ~500 KB/sec.
