So I live in a large house (18 people), and we have a comcast modem in the basement, with a larger Dlink switch. The switch seems to be working fine, we have it connected to the board which goes to all of the rooms (all singles) in the house.
However, we have no wireless internet, and I'm trying to figure out what to do. I bought a Dlink DIR-615 Draft 802.11N wireless router last summer and it's really blown, but I can't figure out if it's because the router sucks or just because I'm a complete newb with setting it up.
Wired internet is perfect. So right now I have the router sitting in my room, which is centrally located, and my laptop, sitting right next to it, varies from seeing it at full 5 bar connection, to not seeing it at all, which I'd say is 80-90% of the time. When I have it plugged in in the actual modem/switch room, a similar thing happens.
So here are my questions:
1. Is there a better way to set things up/if so, how do I do it? Every time I restart the modem the router will work for like 30 minutes and then go invisible again.
2. If that router sucks, which would be a good wireless router to plug in? We had an apple router in one of the rooms and it nearly covered the whole house and worked awesome!
3. Is it better to plug into the switch or directly into the modem? Is there anything special I need to configure if I plug directly into the modem?
4. Anything else good to know/read? I'd love to learn more about how this stuff works but I'm only with the most beggining gaming knowledge of like pinging, ip addresses, and opening ports so I can host games on bnet lol.
