Hey as long as people get their football on Sunday. Who cares if Comcast is bending them over. Obfuscation.

Modem audits suck.

Call in and ask for a Sup. Don't talk to the peeon that answers the phone. Tell the sup the situation and they can fix it. Basically they need to contact the department that did the audit, find what MAC address flagged your account, make sure that is the MAC address that is being used, then check the billing system to see what MAC is assigned to your equipment. Its a pain and it takes 3 departments to get done.

Or I suppose you could call in and ask what MAC the billing system shows. Then call tech support and see what MAC is being used. If they aren't both the MAC on your modem, you will know where the problem is.

comcast always worked for me and their retentions always gives you good offers. whenever you need to talk to someone is when you run into problems. their service department is horrible. i pay for my parents internet and they only have comcast available at their area. luckily they haven't had any issues. usually if i need a new deal i'll get on customer chat.

anyway, what you might need to do is go to one of their physical locations and talk to someone in person.

I agree with you op. I have comcast and have had so many issues with them its ridiculous.

Had triple play, after year 2 they raised their rates as expected.
I cancel the TV and Phone, just have Internet.
I return the equipment via the ups box and label THEY supplied.
I get contacted by a loss management company saying they never received the equipment.
They find it 2 months later after repeated communication with Comcast and showing that it was delivered by UPS.
They start to charge me for two "digital adapters" that I never had.
Spend 2 months getting that cleared up.
I buy my own cable modem, return the leased one, and they are still charging me for it.
I just now finally have a normal bill without random equipment charges.

They really do have the best internet around but it wasn't worth the effort.

Comcast is a bunch of crooks

just a random vent

about a month ago, I got a letter from Comcast notifying me that due to some kind of audit error, they hadn't been charging me a modem rental fee and that going forward, I'd be getting charged $8/month for renting a modem from Comcast. "generously," the letter told me that the charges would not be back-dated but would start with my next bill.

only one problem -- I own the modem, and have for the +4 years I've been with Comcast.

I've spent the past few weeks arguing with them on the phone and have even faxed them receipts of my Best Buy online order for the modem, but they're swearing up and down that it's their equipment (nevermind the fact that they haven't sent me one shred of documentation indicating that I signed for equipment delivery from them)

not even sure where to go from here, hence the random venting. I'd cancel in a heartbeat, but then what? give my own modem back to Comcast so they don't send a collection agency after me?

You are just figuring this out now?

Comcast named Worst Company in America on the same day it files TWC merger paperwork

Talk about incredible timing! On the same day that Comcast and Time Warner Cable are filing their merger proposal paperwork with the Federal Communications Commission, Consumerist has announced that Comcast has won its annual poll for the “Worst Company in America.”

For the record, this is now the second time that Comcast has won this particular dishonor, as it last won Consumerist’s “Golden Poo” trophy back in 2010.

This year’s award is very special for the company, however, because it comes just as it’s trying to do a major public relations charm offensive to convince American consumers and politicians that it should be allowed to merge with Time Warner Cable in a proposed deal worth $45 billion.

It will be interesting to see whether Comcast addresses the fact that both it and its proposed merger partner are seemingly hated by their own customers but for the time being it looks like the company is ignoring the negative noise and is focussing its efforts on heavily lobbying both lawmakers and regulators in Washington, D.C. to help the merger go through without a hitch. After all, just because you’re the “Worst Company in America” doesn’t mean you aren’t well-connected.

Cable companies operate as something close to a public utility depending upon the local franchise laws and agreement. They are required to follow these laws and agreements if they want the agreement renewed and not be subject to fines.

If I were you, instead of cancelling (which only hurts you if they're the only game in town) I would do the following

a) Don't pay the fee and associated taxes, just pay the rest.

b) Find out who is responsible for renewing your local cable franchise agreement with Comcast and setting the regulations.

c) When you receive a bill in the mail from Comcast with the rental fee, write a letter to Comcast explaining the situation and cc whichever entity/entities are responsible for b above AND and other local city council or state congressman if nothing local. Include all documentation such as the original letter explaining that you must start paying the rental fee, receipts, photos of the cable modem, box, etc.

d) repeat above every month if you don't hear back. include a copy of everything you mailed out in the previous month(s) and add another party to the cc list every month (state attorney general, state senate, FCC, Congressman, Senator, etc.).

Good luck.

Why do I have a feeling they are proud of their current status? Verizon isn't much better here but honestly Comcast doesn't care anymore if you drop them either. They used to offer last chance discounts but they are now the largest of them all, they could careless now.

Aw crap, I just remembered. I used to work for Comcast.D:

I came up with a defeatist plan of action :\

1. I suck it up and pay the $8/month for the next 6 months

2. meanwhile, my boyfriend cancels his Comcast subscription since he hardly uses it (he's hardly home as it is, and when he *is* home, he's just watching Netflix... his friends who live down the hall should let him use their wifi in exchange for a few bucks or some liquor)

3. in 6-ish months when his lease is up and we're about ready to move in together, I cancel Comcast and he re-subscribes here as a new customer. even if I have to surrender my modem and buy a new one, the expense should be offset by the new customer discounts.

We ought to start a class-action lawsuit, I'm game! The problem is trying to find a law firm big enough and willing to do it, corporate America sticks together. If they were willing I am sure they could find ways around the arbitor situation. Better yet, thought about trying to get onto one of the major networks with a lot of information and people to back this up about what is going on with Comcast. Fox had someone on the other day, cant remember who it was, saying Comcast was the worse service ever in the history of ISPs. - a prominent person. I got a letter also about overlooked charging me for my modem. Let them know that it hadn't been overlooked and that I owned my own. Then they started cutting off my service and saying, " they see I still have my 2.0 modem and it has no more life and that is why I can't get on, then offered to lease one for $8.00 a month. - LOL. I am using that same modem on another computer to write this, that they don't know about through a company I work for on-line " this lifeless modem". It just goes on and on. I wonder how many of us on this site have complaints? Maybe the moderator could let us know? All one has to do is Google "modem 2.0 vs 3.0 and this site is one of the many to come up. I was then able to confirm my accusations to them about their lies.

Comcast is turning your home Wi-Fi router into a Xfinity WiFi home hotspot.
http://www.sfgate.com/business/article/Comcast-sued-for-turning-home-Wi-Fi-routers-into-5943750.php
"The company is activating a second high-speed Internet channel broadcast from newer-model wireless gateway modems that residential customers lease from the company."

If you don't want other people to use your router/electricity and potential bandwidth, you have to manually opt out. You pay for the router, and Comcast may turn it into a public hotspot which may increase the amount of electricity you use and decrease your bandwidth. All without notifying the consumer. Those are some brass balls. FTC needs to DENY this TWC/Comcast merger.

Just got the bill email last night so I haven't had time to bitch them out yet. I have a copy of our chat session as well for reference. F*&^ these guys. I swear....

Also, since adding their cable, my internet has been slower, more like ~12-20Mbps instead of the 50+ I was getting before upgrading the cable.

They pulled the modem rental charge on me a few months ago (I own my modem). They claimed the modem was theirs because "their records say so." This happened to literally thousands of customers at the same time and for every single person they claim the error couldn't be theirs and they've never heard of it before. It literally took FOUR months to get them to take off the charge on future bills, and they NEVER refunded the money they charged me, even after they promised to do so three times.

Comcast is the only high-speed option I have. Thank you, FCC.

yup.

I did eventually get my issue resolved after months of phone calls/emails, but I likewise never got any kind of back credit for the money they mistakenly billed me for.

I'd say I'm surprised there's no class action suit over this, but I'm sure Comcast customers are all forced into forced arbitration.

some of those "early termination fee" charges are odd, but everything else looks like what they quoted you (or close to it, I didn't do the math). That bill appears to be for almost all of December, and for January.

You can thank the SCOTUS for that. We'll basically never see any action in punishing these companies that steal a little money from a lot of people, unless these one-sided arbitration laws are changed. As Breyer wrote in his dissent, "What rational lawyer would have signed on to represent the Concepcions in litigation for the possibility of fees stemming from a $30.22 claim?"http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AT&T_Mobility_v._Concepcion#cite_note-NYTimesDecision-14

Post this on Reddit. I'm serious. It's a full on anti-Comcast circle jerk and will probably get some attention.
