Comcast Internet Question

I just signed up for Comcast internet and they slowest they are selling is 6mbit downstream for ~$40. They wouldn't sell anything cheaper to me. My question is I am curious if anyone has anything slower than 6mbit and if so, what are they paying?

When I first had Comcast installed here, my speed was 3Mbit down, but they have squentially increased it for free to 6Mbit for the same $40 I've always paid. Also, check out http://www.comcastoffers.com for the latest promos they're running (usually a free modem).

If you're looking for super-cheap Internet access (must sign a contract though), look into SBC's DSL packages. They're usually $20/mo.

Qwest also has dirt cheap packages. With any of those, you definitely get what you pay for.

when i first got comcast (excite) in 1999, it was 3mb down for $35 per month. then they went to 1.5 down for $50. per month, now they are like 4/5 down for $42. a month.

I paid $20/mo for internet through them, but that was a promotional deal and it was only for 6 months.

$40 is the going rate - they don't have a lower tier of service.

Adelphia here is supposed to change to Comcast shortly.
I thought Time Warner was buying them but a lady who works there said it was actually two entities, Comcast and one that I forgot.

Has anyone here tried changing to DSL and comcast giving you a cheaper deal just to stay with them?

i know someone that's done it twice. took the modem down to the comcast office, and told them they were switching to dsl because it was cheaper. both times, offered $29.99/mo for a year instead of the usual $45 or so.

can you call them instead and say that?

Yep ... if you go to their office, they have a retention department and they WILL try to keep you. I've paid $19.99/month for Comcast internet for almost 2 years now.

Their retention department on the phone isn't as good as the in person .... they want you to actually be there to cancel to give you the best deal.

Then you get DSL. When Sprint PCS retentions were handing out sweet deals, I took advantage of it. You have to be ready to switch. You can't just go in as a tourist. You have to be convincing and plan on quitting. You might be able to back out and say you'll think about it and try again but these guys do tend to mark it on your file and they will know if you keep coming back.
