When I first had Comcast installed here, my speed was 3Mbit down, but they have squentially increased it for free to 6Mbit for the same $40 I've always paid. Also, check out http://www.comcastoffers.com for the latest promos they're running (usually a free modem).
If you're looking for super-cheap Internet access (must sign a contract though), look into SBC's DSL packages. They're usually $20/mo.

i know someone that's done it twice. took the modem down to the comcast office, and told them they were switching to dsl because it was cheaper. both times, offered $29.99/mo for a year instead of the usual $45 or so.
