Comcast increases download speeds in New England

Text

"PowerBoost is built into the high-speed network Comcast uses to connect its broadband subscribers to the World Wide Web. The network recognizes when a user is downloading a large file like a movie or video game and speeds their connections -- to 12 megabits-per-second for subscribers to Comcast's 6 megabits-per-second service or 16 megabits-per-second for 8 megabits-per-second users."

Sounds good to me.

Yea, probably not much more than a compression algorithm a la NetZero HiSpeed. Not worth getting too excited if you aren't a customer already...

Of course, when I move to Cambridge, I will be a customer, so I can get mildly excited at that time. 😛

don't all modern http servers gzip everything on the fly now anyways? whats the point?

"Comcast's download speeds could be raised to as much as 100 megabits-per-second without upgrading to its underlying network."

Biggest lie ever. It took them 3 months to fix my problem. My speeds were dropping to 700kbps at nights because they had overloaded my node.
