This is my first experience with broadband. My father just got his cable internet and right in front of the technician I told my father go to bestbuy and get the 4 port router/firewall. Well the tech got all bent out of shape and said theyll shut you off the first time they run a port scan and see the router. Why would they or do they do this? I know you could prolly feed everyone in your neighberhood high speed access but damn dont these companies trust anyone? I would just like to know if anyones service has ever been shut off because they are usin a router? And do they make plain ole hubs with a hardware firewall?

Thanks

I'm using a router right now. You shouldn't have said to get the router. I never have been shut down by the cable company. They only want you to have 1 computer hooked up to the internet. Don't worry about it.

They won't shut you off. And they can't even detect the router, so don't worry about it. You can find it a lot cheaper than Best Buy, look in Hot Deals or FS/FT. I have the SMC Barricade, it's pretty decent hardware for the cost.

@Home is darn scared right now, and rightly so. They're losing everything and insiste on running from the answers, and instead embrace their failures. @Home techs are now FORBIDDEM from posting any negative, derogatory, or in fact any work related information on any non-offical @Home site. The memo in question mentions legal actions against anyone not adhering to the policy. Fortunately they already fired me so they can blow it out their bottom line

Seriously do it. @Home only makes active port scans on news and occasionally dhcp or mail to look for rogues. They also proactively monitor bandwidth usage so opening up a lot of high access services might get you noticed and shut down. What you are suggesting is offically against the rules and if they want you shut off for any reason, they can investigate deep enough to usually determine what's going on. Then supposedly they'll ask you to shut it down before turning off your service, but if they don't like you they'll just drop the axe. Trust me, seen it.

@Home is garbage. The cable companies are worse. There is really very little good to say about the companies. The service itself, when it works, is overall a good bargain. The atitude of the install tech is due to the cable companies and @Home crying in their beer about being such a horrible company. Expect it to get much, much worse very soon.

Yes, but under the AUP you are only allowed to do that IF you purchase additional IP's from @Home. Also no tech is allowed (although we still did) to support you if you are networked...the techs will tell you to set one system straight to the modem or no support.

Don't let the tech install your cable modem. Do it yourself, just ask for IP address, gateway, and DNS servers.
