Comcast HDTV

My sister called comcast to inquire abotu HDTV and she told me that they said she has to get their reciever. Is this true, or can we use another reciever that we can buy from somewhere else? My parents have an HD ready tv.

You can view unencrypted content if you have a QAM tuner. If you have a cable card slot, you don't need a receiver, just cable card.
It's only about $6 month for the HD receiver.

Comcast cant even get digital cable working correctly in my area without static or massive downtime. What makes you think that they could ever pull off HDTV services?

My HD service is great 95% of the time. A lot of the issues aren't the fault of Comcast but the fault of the signal provider. Today however, my two INHD channels aren't working at all.

If you just want HD Locals, make sure they don't trick you into paying for digital cable when you don't need too.

yeah thats what i was thnking...since i only want local do you think i should go for over-the-air?

Try antennaweb.org and see what the outlook appears to be for your zipcode in relation to the OTA digital sources.

pretty much all the ones I want to watch are 'yellow' or 'small multi-directional antenna' on antennaweb.org

which antenna do you guys suggest?

Hell yeah, if all you want is local, go for OTA.

Well if Comcast has all the locals you want, then it would just be $5 a month for a box rental versus close to 200 for a reciever. So you should do which you think is better financially for you. $5 a month or close to 200 one time payment.

Go with comcast, trust me

Even if you only want locals

$5 month for a box vs $200 for receiver + $20-$50 antenna with so-so reception depending on where you live.

It just makes better sense

i live 7 miles out of philly in a fairly open apartment complex, so I dont think reception will be a problem...and I hear that the quality of over-the-air is better than cable because it isnt compressed. And I'd rather spend 250 at once, rather than pay comcast $9 a month for the receiver(thats what teh dude told my sister).

but HD locals get boring after a while. really...i got an hdtv pci tuner for my computer last week. and im already bored. No ESPN, INHD, SHO, HBO...oh well, at least i get to watch the superbowl.
Thats why im contemplating signing up for time warner.

weird, i have the exact same antenna but from Philips (came with my hdtv tuner).
It works very well. I think I live about 4-7 miles, and I get 95-100% of the signal almost all channels.

hmmm, more to think about. my parents are going to be moving in a couple of months...most likely to a small town in western PA and I'm not sure they'll get any HD signal there and I don't plan on getting an HDTV anytime soon, so i'm thinking it might turn out to be a waste of money to buy OTA stuff for the TV

For me, it's $5/mo for the HDTV receiver, or $10/mo for the Dual-Tuner HD-DVR. Guess which one I picked?

Has your box failed yet? Mine hasn't thankfully, but I've heard a lot of reported problems with the DVR boxes.

OTA is compressed the same as cable, no more no less.

If he telling you $9 then he is lying, the cost is only $5.

No problems yet. Occasionally the remote will get funky, but not enough to be a problem.

my parents have the most basic cable...its costs them like 10 bucks a month...thats why its $9 a month...if we get the digital and all that mess, he said then it would be 5 bucks
