Comcast + HDTV (Anyone here doing this?)

I went to Comcast's site. It sucks.

I need a new TV and am considering an HDTV Plasma set.

I would love HD. Comcast says it's something like $9/month for an HD Box.... but they don't say what channels I would get. They allude that I would get affiliated channels. So, if I get the HD box .....
Does this mean if I get Discovery, and got the HD box, I'd now get Discovery-HD. But since I do not get HBO, I wouldn't get HBO-HD.

Is this how it works?

Thanks!

So, it sounds like you get all the channels in HD that you normally get.

And hte additional cost is about $9, correct?

No, additional cost is 9.99 for HD Box + 5.99 for HD feed! Yeah, Comcast is a ripoff!

It's $5.95 for just the HD receiver. We have the HD DVR which they claim is $9.95 but then they FORCE you to get the digital package which is $15 extra.

We get the locals, ESPN, ESPN2, INHD1 and 2, Discovery HD, and TNT-HD.

I get all of the above, plus Fox Sports Net in HD and TNT-HD, as well as HDNET and HDNET Movies. The HDNET and INHD channels alone make the expense worthwhile IMO, since they have a lot of great movies, including R-rated ones, uncensored in HD.

Wow you get HDNet through Comcast? Our market sucks!

If it matters, I was a Time Warner Cable guy until Comcast acquired them a few months back. I am still bitter that I can't get HowardTV!

oh and add 5 bucks if you want local channels (regular and hd)

Wasn't dish network ordered to shut down its DVR services by a federal court?

That case is still going through appeals. Dish Network got a federal court to issue an injuction concerning that court order.

So .... Comcast will be the $50 I pay now, plus $15 for digitial cable + $6 for HD service? Soemthing along these lines?
I'm happy with that seeing how I don't care for the movie channels in HD. I'll still get everything I want 😉

Thanks again.

I already discussed this with my wife. Without debating it here again ... we won't be getting a dish.

I already had one of their digital packages, signed up for DVR for $10/mo (answered yes when they asked if I had an HD TV), and ended up getting related HD channels for free (had HBO at the time, got HBO-HD, along with the others.) Dunno if this is standard, so YMMV.

oh ok. yeah I was debating the same thing...but comcast was charging more here than they are for you, so its a better offer for us.

Forogt to mention ....

If I buy a 37+" HDTV at Best Buy ... and agree to a trial of HD service via Comcast ... I get a $200 rebate. So ... it's kinda already worth iust to stick with Comcast.

If all you want are locals in HD, tell them you only want the HD box and not $5 more for the HD feed, or $15 more for digital cable. They are not allowed to charge you money for the HD local feed.

Get the HD-DVR box. It is SO worth it, especially since you're already jacking up your bill anyway, might as well go top of the line at the same time. It can record 2 HD channels at once while watching a recorded HD program at the same time. Pretty wicked.

I have comcast and HD service in Denver. Here's what I get..or use.

Local HD channels
ESPN HD
ESPN2 HD (replaced INHD2)
INHD
TNTHD
Discovery HD
National Geographic Channel is sometimes HD...I think...channel 273 (Fight Science was in HD)
Something called MHD...but I dunno what that is.

I also have HBO, so I get HBO HD

...and then there's some On Demand stuff in HD.

If you just want HD, you can get enhanced cable. It is the same channel offering as standard cable (70ish channels) but digital and has on-demand and music choice. It is only a couple bucks more in my area. Then you pay the money for the HD service and box/DVR on top. That is the cheapest way to get HD. I ordered that but I am tempted to upgrade to a digital package after a bit more research... especially if I can find a deal. When you do call, try your best to negotiate. They always have discount packages to give you.

Agreed. And don't worry about convincing the wife about DVR. My wife was skeptical at first, now she tells me she can't live without it. 😛
