Comcast Ups Cable Speed to 16Mbit

In an effort to fend off competition from Verizon's FiOS service, which offers download speeds of up to 15Mbit per second, Comcast has doubled the speed of its top-tier broadband service to 16Mbit. The change is currently being rolled out in a few markets, including Reston, Va.; Sarasota, Fla.; Fort Wayne, Ind.; and Howard County, Md.

Along with the faster downloads, users will now be able to upload at a speed of 1Mbit per second. The service costs $52.95 USD per month. Other cable operators such as Cox and Adelphia have taken a similar approach to Verizon encroaching on their territory. Comcast says its move was not made specifically in response to the competition, but simply to test new applications it can offer with such high broadband speeds.

Dicks...Adelphia just BARELY rolled out their 8MB premier service, and not even up here yet :(...I'm stuck at 4/.768, it's ridiculous.

current users getting 6megs down get their upload speed upgraded from 384 to 748...or something like that. however, this is only when the market u're in is 16meg capable. only four markets so far mentioned in OP.

i heard comcast is gunning to get 100mb d/l speeds.

I need a modem upgrade... I can't even get my 6Mbps right now but have a solid 4 and very low pings so it's hard to complain too much.

since after the area becomes 16meg capable. so in reston, sarasota, Ft wayne and howard county the 6meg users get 748kB up.

the lab-environment technological max for co-ax right now is 100meg.

Can do a google for "Docsis 3.0"

It supposedly allows up to 100 Mbps download per NODE, so how many users per node, and distance from node will determine what speed each user gets.

Maybe 10 to 20 Mbps is a reasonable upperbound.

Oh, and it's assymetrical. Upload is a lot slower.

This probably won't be nationwide for awhile.

Time Warner and Comcast are supposedly swapping some markets and Los Angeles is one of them so I don't know how that will affect the rollout, around here anyway.

Bigger Bursts for 16mbps = faster speeds for regular users?

We all know that cable comes from a big PIPE ;)

I must really be behind the technological curve, what the heck does FIOS mean?

If they ever offer 16mbs down in my area, that same week I'm buying several tb drives :Q
