wtf.

I sucked it up on Cablevision's mediocre sci-am DVR for the past 3 years because of the price, but I've used Comcast's motorola dvr for 30 minutes just trying to get my repeat recordings setup for the weekend and I'm pretty much ready to go back to Tivo.

the hardware seems fine, I don't want to fault Motorola, but the software... man. I can't seem to pull up tv listings for anything but the next couple hours and it seems like you can only schedule recordings of only new episodes of a series by clicking the "record" button ON a new episode of the series (unlike every single other dvr that I've seen or interacted with where you could record off of a repeat and then just tell it to only record new eps)

holy shit, agreed.

I'm on my 3rd one from Comcast and I've only actually had cable TV since February. Those moto boxes are fucking jokes, we call it 'the motorola remix' when it decides to skip, jitter, freeze or otherwise completely fucking destroy whatever you're watching.

I think its the software.
I have the newer Cisco box. At least once or twice a day the Guide responds VERY slowly. The only thing to do is to reboot the box.
If I watch anything On Demand it's guaranteed that within 24 hours the box will spontaneously reboot. Always when I am recording something.
I am on my third Cisco box since the techs always say the box is defective and to exchange it. But there is no difference in any of them.

Totally agree. Those boxes and Comcast in particular are the devils hatched spawn. I actually threw the remote against the wall; it shattered of course because Comast is just that bad. I'm going to demand Comcast replace the remote and DVR because they suck so bad, and frankly, I am entitled to a comcastic experience, not a craptastic one.

-edit-
Yes I did explode a remote on the wall

I was just about to post about how at least I've got On Demand, but it looks like you can't do anything else while recording two programs.

yeah... as soon as I figure out wtf my account number is and how I can return this piece of garbage to Comcast, I'm sucking up the expense and buying a tivo... this thing is all but unusable.

My moto DVR in my main room is just fine, but the older moto box in my bedroom is just awful. I get at least half a second lag on any button press, and I can hear the HDD clicking/clinking away whenever it's turned on. I just haven't gotten around to trading it in yet.

Absolute worst, and biggest reason I switched to UVERSE. Comcast's programming and ondemand is much better, the way they treat you when your sweetheart contract is up, and the just awful quality of the DVR are unforgivable.

Hard to believe it's worse than Time Warner's. There's been a bug in the DVR software for months now where if you press pause and leave for a few minutes, the video freezes completely and you have to stop it and start again to resume. Total POS.

I could go on for a couple paragraphs about the how fucked up the boxes are, but I'm pretty sure you can set a recording from the guide which I know goes out 2 days at least or even from a program search which goes out further. I've never set a recording, but I've watched my wife.

If the box was just turned on it's going to take a while to populate the guide.

I just gave back my Comcast DVR today for a homebuilt HTPC with a quad CableCARD tuner and I'm just thrilled. The wonderful thing about it is there aren't any monthly fees, just the hardware cost which can be a little daunting if you're building it all at once.

Oh, I love how comcast never lets me see my on demand. I keep getting error code 7. I call and they say, "Oh, it's normal....you just have to call us every time you get that message". WTF? I am not going to call and wait on hold just to get on demand. So, that means, when i want my on demand, I have to call to demand my on demand.

Also, when you move to the city, Comcast has these mini version of the non-DVR boxes. Request that you not get it. It's a huge POS.

I completely agree. I'm on my 4th DVR from comcast, and they all f'ing suck. Either they don't respond to the remote, or they miss recordings, or they just crap out. I'm about ready to give up and buy a tivo.

To heck with that. When I read what you posted I threw my head against the wall and IT exploded.

I concur. This is our third in less than a year, and this one is mostly functional, although it randomly rebooted last night. Good thing I wasn't recording.

Time Warner has very similar boxes here. Glad I switched to U-Verse.
I cannot believe how horrible Time Warner's boxes are now. It literally can take 10 seconds after a button press before the action happens. I'm not kidding, I've clocked it. The box before this one looked exactly the same but it had very little lag. I'm not sure what happened, but all of a sudden it's like they switched out the processor for a PII to save $0.50.

I can deal with a godawful interface, but constant lag clocking in at seconds for many operations is ridiculous.

Have to agree here. Had a SciAm box from Comcrap that worked "pretty much" perfectly for over 4 years then died. Started in with the Cisco boxes and had to exchange 3 of them in a month. Kept checking the store, (near my gym so not a big deal) 3x a week until they happened to have another SciAm box in stock. I have to set HD manually on the box every time I turn on the TV (didnt have to do this with the original) but at least every thing seems to work from there. Probably wont give this one up till it dies completely. I dont think they are giving them out at all around here anymore. Got to standardize so their "Techs" can deal with problems like it not being plugged in or turned on.

I had the moto boxes from comcast and moved to a new town where they have the sci am boxes. I didn't realize how much I liked the interface on the moto boxes until I got this shitty box. If you have 2 shows recording at 10 PM and another one going from 9-10:01 PM instead of clipping one of the shows by a minute it just doesn't record one of them.

The techs told me the lag in response is a bad hard drive and the unit needs to be replaced.

Replacing the unit is akin to rebooting a frozen printer or a screwed up workstation. The real question is, what do they do with the unit they just replace? Also, are their some environmental/customer specific factors that lead to more failures?

which DVR do you have? i have a Motorola DCX3400 and have 0 problems setting up series recordings or viewing days at time via the lisitings. you are aware you can control your DVR online via the comcast website? you can also set recordings online via the website also. that is what i do, it is much better viewing the listings online for me.
