So I'm trying to buy this cable modem on Craigslist so the Comcast guy can install it tomorrow. The seller says it is 5 yrs old so I want to know if it will still work with Comcast (he says it does). I just don't want to buy a modem that won't let me max out my connection

I didn't give me a complete model number but basically it is a Toshiba PCX DOCSIS line of cable modems.

there are a lot of Toshiba PCX modems, depends on the model...as long as it supports DOCSIS 1.1 (preferably 2.0) and has a 100Mb ethernet interface, you should be good. A 10Mb ethernet interface will work, but will be a limiting factor if your internet connection is any faster.

Listen stay away from the toshiba pcx modems. I started out using them and in my experience they don't last very long. I went through two of them in less than two years and then I switched to linksys. The linksys befcmu10 v4 or cm100 are very good modems and I have both of them. The motorola surfboard modems are also very good and if you see a sb5120 at a good price get it.
