Looks like a lot of people in the midwest are having trouble. I've switched to Google DNS until they sort things out.

Epic fail. I sat here for an hour until I got a friend to google it and found the Google DNS for me. Fucking annoying.

Is there any disadvantage to just using the google DNS all the time?

Maybe they can monitor what website you're visiting. D:

I'll use it for a while since my internet speed increased a little bit.

Your speed probably went up because your neighbors are still offline with DNS issues.

any clue as to what happened to the DNS server?

Took me a good hour to accept that it wasn't my router, modem, network adapter or phone.

My girlfriend just had to do exactly that, then I saw this thread and had to walk her through changing the DNS :)

I found out there was an internet issue when I tried calling 1-800-COMCAST for a problem with my TV. Phones were busy for a long time so I went online for help and found things were down. Looks like I won't be getting my TV fixed tonight. I'm going to miss Walking Dead in 3 min.

I just got this automated message while I was waiting online to talk with someone in the TV support area.

Comcast Support)>
Thank you for contacting Comcast. We are currently experiencing technical difficulties with high speed internet service in the Chicago, Michigan, Indianapolis and Twin Cities areas. Our Technicians are aware of the issue and are working toward resolution. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience.

I feel like Google knows way too much about me already, so I prefer to use OpenDNS at 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.

my rule for troubleshooting is "its always something simple".

Do you know how far down the "simple" list a DNS server is? Luckily my phone still had a 3G connection and the freaking awesome OP made this thread.

Thanks for posting this, OP. I'm watching Sunday Night Football andf was trying to check espn.com on my phone though wi-fi and thought it was a connection issue on my end.

Fortunately switching over to Google Public DNS seems to have fixed everything.

It took me 2 hours before my friend finally suggested it might be DNS. I don't know what I was thinking about. Switching to D-Link's anti-phishing DNS brought me back online.

Your speed probably went up because your neighbors are still offline with DNS issues.

Plus, DNS is only used just before the connection is established. After that, it's traffic between the associated IPs no matter what DNS you are using.

Use the Level 3 DNS. It's 4.2.2.1 through 4.2.2.8 I believe.

That was the Google Boogieman doesn't get to know more about you. Plus I'm sure that would piss Comcast off a bit, given the recent battle between the two.

people, you can point to multiple dns servers. Just spread them out and you should be fine.

This.

For the longest time I ran a win2k server that also cached from the root hints, no ISP or DNS service, it just queried the roots or whatever they redirected to.
