Comcast claims the FCC lacks any authority and should back off

"Let the market decide!" Where were these words when Comcast became a government-backed monopoly? Once you gain that status, a regulatory body (the FCC) gets to mess with you whenever it wants to. That's how it works.

The market for cable/internet services is practically nonexistant (ie not a free market), and now they want to claim that their illegal activities (packet forging) are okay because we're in a free market!

What the heck is Comcast doing? They're owning themselves publicity-wise.

I am moving to Natick.

$8 a month for basic cable (just basic channels).
$42 for FIOS.

No complaints here.

If I wanted actual cable with a box, it is still cheaper than FIOS TV. Heck, even cable internet is the same price as 5 down FIOS.

We are in a extremely competitive free market.

Customers can get dish, directTV, over the air or telco or any number of other providers. Most broadband customers have a choice, so it's nowhere near a monopoly.

Consider yourself the lucky 1%.

I am ditching Comcast the moment I get the opportunity. I hate them. Verizon is sitting on a gold mine. They need to spread their wings in south florida.

Not for most of the US.

Here in VA near DC there are some places where there is onyl 1 option for high speed internet. And of course they charge top dollar. Mind you less then 20 miles away where there is FIOS the price is much cheaper.

Where my parents live dial up and Sat. are the only options for internet and TV.

This is the heart of the matter. The reason why Comcast is used so much is because there is not other competitive option in a lot of areas. The reason why Comcast's quality has turned to utter shit is because there is not enough competition....yet. Remember that Comcast used to provide really great service. This all changed over time when they realized they could provide lesser/cheaper service and still bring in the dollars.

This is a tough one. On one hand the FCC needs to fuck off and die. On the other hand Comcast needs to fuck off and die.

Negative. I have on choice, Cox, and that's it. Verizon has been expending service but hasn't made it to my area.

Yea that was what I was thinking as well.

The person Bush put in charge is pissing off the GS employees at FCC. But Comcast is such garbage...

hard to root for either of them. But in the end it win win for most people. :)

Stop using what is in your area. The majority of broadband customers have a choice. Not all, but the majority. People continually use just their neighborhood and forget to look at the whole market.

There is no monopoly, but in the small minority of areas there may only be one choice (not really true either because there's satellite).

It is EXACTLY because of free market that the prices are so low.

You can argue whether or not they are a monopoly till the end of time. However, the fact of the matter is that the reason why Comcast went from being a quality ISP to one of pure shit is due to not enough competition. I don't care if that makes them a monopoly or not. All I know is that is what happened. As soon as Verizon or another viable competitor steps in and becomes as widely available as Comcast then they will be forced to change. Someone will either buy Comcast or they will have to beef up their quality. They will never be as good as they used to be though.

AGAIN that is not true. MOST of the US either has 1 chlice or none at all. Before FIOS was here in N. VA rates were much higher for high speed internet. Now they have come down... in places that can get more then 1. But for others rates are still very high compared to other places not to far from here.

I know as before me and my wife bought our current house I would look at water/sewer rates, cable, internet, etc... fees/prices on houses we checked out. A lot of them only had 1 choice. Soem it looked like it was cable vs dsl but all the times i called the houses were not in range for DSL. So thats why the cable/internet was so high.

Boy is comcast going to have egg on its face when the FCC calls their bluff and deploys their mechanized assault division.
