I'm wondering if there's a way to specify which box it goes to.. as I'd like to be able to change the kid's tv from the other room..

$199? lol so you're going to get one in a decade? This is fucking cool, a full color remote with a much smaller screen costs way more than an iPad. Not to mention even the uber high end Pronto isn't anywhere near as advanced as this. I don't own a TV, but if I ever get one I'll be getting an iPad to use as a remote. Well assuming I live somewhere that has Comcast.

The iPad isn't worth more than $199, so I'll wait as long as necessary. All Apple products are overpriced.

Really? What other device has a 10" LED IPS screen for $199? Oh that's right, none of them. Sorry but you're talking out of your ass.

That's the thing that kills me...this iPad business isn't that complicated. As a web surfing device/eReader, sure, maybe it's worth $200. But it replaces literally TENS OF THOUSANDS of dollars in custom touchscreen equipment.

Check out the Jazzmutant Lemur. It's a $2000 touchscreen midi controller. Or, you know, a $500 iPad.

Look at custom home integration, charging hundreds, if not thousands for touchscreen remotes. Or, you know, a $500 iPad.

Etc etc.

Oh, and it's also a cool 10" web interface and an eReader. In case you were wondering.

No, I see the product's limitations, not its over-glorified capabilities. Unlike everyone else around here, I call a spade a spade. The product hasn't earned its hype. It may by its 2nd or 3rd generation, but not as of today. I do give credit where credit's due, so I will say, it will make a nice remote.

In your opinion, are the iPod Touch or ZuneHD overpriced?

If no, then what do you think a larger screen, and faster processor on those devices would be worth?

Do you think that a Kindle is overpriced?

If no, then what do you think a color screen, and the ability to do more than just read on it is worth?

If you answered yes to both above, then I would be interested in knowing what technology you feel is not overpriced.

Stepping in here, I personally think most of those things are overpriced, from a "what does it do for me" perspective.

I love music, but I don't think carrying my music with me is worth the price of an ipod touch. Sure, it can do other things too, but the vast majority of those things are really peripheral. Calculator? The sticky note app? Little games? A level? They're all things I do just fine without and don't need to spend $350 on a 64gb touch to have with me.

Sure, there are people who actually USE all those apps, but I think for most it's either the "ooh, gadget!" factor, or the "cool" factor.

Yes, the kindle is overpriced. It's a very functional device, but for me in my life, it's not worth the cost.

So much of this is a matter of perspective: he's saying $199 is what it's worth TO HIM. And a bunch of people are getting defensive. His life may not parallel yours, an ipad might be 3 weeks pay to him, or he might not see any significant value in what an ipad would do for him. At least not significant enough.

For the record, I'm personally of the opinion LOTS of technology is overpriced. Sometimes I'll pay for it, sometimes I wont. I bought an Xbox 360 after a price drop (still a lot of money to /play video games and nothing else/) but don't see the need for a cell phone. My wife's got one through work, but I just don't need one enough to pay $50-$200+/month for it.

These things might be priced "correctly" based on supply and demand, but that doesn't mean they have to be "worth" their price to anyone at all, much less everyone.

And that was why I was asking the question the way I did, if the OP thinks that the Kindle is overpriced, then that answers a larger question. I personally think that the Kindle is a little overpriced, it does books/magazines... cool. But at $350, and the fact that I would have to repurchase my books means that it is overpriced to me.

The iPad is less overpriced, but for me, the magic price is $299 or $399, $199 would of course be amazing, but I don't need it to get that low before I would more seriously consider getting one.

I tend to think of these things (most of the time, anyway) very much in terms of (how long do I need to work to pay for this) divided by (what's it going to do for me/how long will it do it for/etc) = (is it worth it).

Even the $300 mark would be... eh - that's the price of a netbook that has better networkability and flexibility. The iPad has compelling features the netbook doesn't as well, so they're roughly on the same field in my book.

I'm curious how others evaluate (or if they evaluate) purchases like this.

My methodology is similar. I could get $300-400 of use and enjoyment out of an iPad, almost more so than a netbook since I already have a laptop.
