comcast cable vs. verizon dsl

i have two options in my building

comcast is 6mb vs verizon's 3mb. the comcast is a lot faster, and almost 3x as expensive. i download a lot of big files off of my firm's server and sometimes use bittorrent. which service should i get? also, if i choose verizon, does that mean i need to have a phone service with them as well?

You don't need to have phone service with them, but you do need phone service.

I don't know that I would pay 3X the money for 2X the performance, but that's just me. Also, are there a lot of people using Comcast Cable in your building? If there are, you'll see slower speeds sometimes.

Verizon DSL is known for having HORRID customer service.

3x more for cable? The last Comcast line I had was in July of 2005. I had the 6mb/796k pro line for $52.95 including my cable tv bundle discount. So, DSL is $16 per month? Or is DSL $40 and Comcast is asking for $120?

Please fill in the gaps.

Comcast has something like 12 or 15 mb for large file downloads automatically, then it switches to the normal which I think is like 8mb.

I'd definitely go with Comcast if you use alot of file downloading, streaming, etc..... you'll get higher speeds.

I have comcast and despite that commercial, that has never happened for me. I download large files all the time, and I never get more than the regular 8mb. Also, for some reason i can never get above 350kbps up.

so you need a open phone line in order to use the dsl service?

Well yeah, you can't just broadcast DSL through the air.... unless you're stealing someone's WiFi, but that would be illegal... 😉

If you have the option of Verizon DSL, FIOS might be in the near future. Especially if you are still living in NYC (as your profile states).

Im moving to Salt Lake City in October and am looking for something cheap and fast. I wish there was a way to have comcast for dsl prices, that would be awsome since i will be in college and on a tight budget since i wont be working.
