comcast cable, really low speeds.

i just installed comcast cable, and the advertised speed is 6mbps. with my old 3mbps dsl i was getting 2.5mbps, so i assumed i would get at least over 5. but, i installed it, without a router, and i was getting 800kbps, and then after i installed my WRT54G router the speed went down to 400kbps. what is going on here?
