Comcast Cable--Need YOUR help

Hi there,

I live in San Francisco and recently got Comcast cable. The speed was advertised as 1.5 megabytes download. So far the fastest average I got is around 200kb, which is less than one seventh of the speed advertised. I download from a wide range of sources and 200kb comes up fairly often. I have tried contacting their customer support but they weren't able to help me and refuse to send a techician to check out what's wrong. I'm thinking about terminating service but before I do, I was wondering if you ever faced a similar situation. Any help given will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading!
 
First of all, if you look closely, it should say "1.5 megabits"
Btw 200kb is pretty good, i am using RCN in Boston and I can only download up to around 160kps
I am sure they are definitely not lying to you or something like that.

You should really study for the measurement in IT

agreed. furthermore, be glad you don't have a better connection... I just left the comfort of my comcast cable connection for an uplink into the campus fiber line. there's so much crap from these latest viruses on there that it's just useless. thank god for etherpeek 5 🙂
 
I could be wrong with my math here, but isn't 200kilabytes per second about 2 megabytes per second. 100kb = 1mb correct? In that case dude your connection is better than advertised.
 
mega=1000, 200kbytes=.2mbytes. But you are kinda right, 200kbytes=1.6mbit, so it is a little better than advertised, assuming the 200kbyte is accurate.

shinyrocks, I think you have simply confuse bits for bytes, 1byte=8bits. When a company advertises their connection, they do it in bits, when you download something on your computer, it will generally be shown as bytes(or kbytes)
 
Comcast advertises it as 1.5Mbps. Is that a bits or bytes designation? When I download it says KB. I assume that's always bytes right? I use Mozilla Firebird if that helps.

1.5 Megabits per second advertised speed.

200KiloBytes per second average download * 8 bits/Byte = 1600 Kilobits per second = 1.6 Megbits per second.
Enjoy the fact that you are achieving higher than advertised speeds.
