Went to turn on the tv in the morning for my kiddos to be greeted with a TV that would turn on briefly ~15 seconds then go blank and start flashing the red led at me 7 times over and over.

Fast forward a week and bought a new tv. Get home, plug it in..... no signal from the cable box.

After checking the 7 blink code it appears the main board for the old tv is dead which coincidently is where the hdmi ports are and where the box was plugged in.

My brother works for a local high end tv and appliance store. He told me that surges through the cable lines are a common thing and they kill tv's all the time.

What kind of hassle is it going to be to get Comcast own up?

It is just as possible (and maybe even more likely) that a surge from a blown out control board in your TV damaged the cable box.

I have never heard of a power surge on a cable line before except when lightning hit the cable box/line, in which case Comcast wouldn't be liable for the damage anyway.

It can't hurt to call and ask them, but unless you can PROVE that Comcast was at fault, you'll have a hard time getting anything out of it.

Not going to be Comcast fault.

A good family friend had one of those huge back yard dishes in the 80's and it took a direct lightning hit and fried most of his A/V gear.

I also have a bluray, htpc and dreamcast hooked up to the tv which are fine. All of it is/was behind a surge battery back up

If your coax is grounded properly there shouldn't be any spikes or surges. Charter in my area just changed their grounding policy. No more tieing to water lines or ground rods, it has to be tied to the main power panel ground.
