Combustion Engine With NO Pistons

Its in the new Maxda Rx-8 called a 'Rotary Engine'. Taken from the main page:

"Mazda?s new rotary engine, the Renesis, is the culmination of nearly 80 years of technological research and development ? a process that began with the dream of a seventeen-year-old boy, the visionary pioneer of the rotary engine, Felix Wankel."

Sorry if this is a repost/old news but its news to me.

You know rotary engines have been around for AGES, right?

The old Mazda RX-7's all use Rotary engines...

Uhm ... Mazda has been using Wankel engines for decades.
As for "Combustion Engine With NO Pistons" ... plenty of those around ... jets and rockets.

I hope the RX8 is better than the RX7 engine. My wife (well girlfriend at the time) had a RX7 with a rotary engine. That thing was a piece of crap every winter. You had a gas petal, a clutch, and a choke which you had to all manipulate perfectly at the same time to get the engine started. It was usually a 5-10 minute ordeal when the engine was cold in winter. Then of course if you stopped at a stop sign or stop light, the whole engine would stall and you'd have to redo the whole 5-10 minute starting up ordeal...

Oh my god, I can't believe you're writing this. If it's not a joke, it's absolutely the clearest case of living under a rock I've seen...ever!

I guess I've done this before though, but still 🙂

In other news... an Anandtech member by the name of moonshinemadness has decided to step out of a cave from which he has been living for the last 30 years.

Case seals were leaking, a common problem on older RX-7 engines.

Come on guys, give the guy a break... 😀 I bet tons of people out there don't know about the rotary engine until Mazda hyped it up for the RX-8 as well...

I read once a long time ago that the guy that invented the rotary engine, (Felix Wankel?) was murdered by his partner for the patent. Or maybe Wankel WAS the partner?
