Combo USB 2.0+Firewire 3.5" Hdd Enclosure. Aluminum with Stand

I bought one of these from Compusa, had to return it because the drive got WAY too hot. I could smell burning something, it wasn't pretty. It says it is aluminum, but there was very little metal on the one I bought, and lots of insulating plastic. It might work better with a 5400rpm drive, but be careful. But, that is a good price, I paid $50 for mine.

Damn, I wish I had seen this post a couple months ago!!!!!!!!!

I got one of these from cUSA a few months ago because I knew I'd be getting a big drive by summer.

Well, my 250GB Maxtor arrived today so I proceeded to install into this enclosure. I was amazed at how hot it got... it took less than 10 minutes (w/o any load) for this case to become almost hot enough to fry an egg!!

Because I cant find the recipt (and the return period has prob. expired) I doubt I'd be able to return this horrid enclosure.

Oh well, live and learn!

Im using this one from compgeeks. The top and bottom is all aluminum and the sides are vented mesh. No fans but the aluminum dissapates heat real well. I have a 120gb in there and it works fine.

Do you know what chipset is being used in your enclosure? (ALi, Cypress, Prolific, Gensys, etc.)

That's a common problem with most of the fanless aluminum enclosures on the market. They're just poorly designed. I've used a couple fanless aluminum enclosures from Plumax and Bytecc, and the drives also got dangerously hot in them.

The Metal Gear Box (a generic design sold under various names) at least has ventilated sides. If the mounting system allows for metal-to-metal transfer of heat from the hard drive to the enclosure casing, that'd be even better.
