I am building a new system and I want to get a very good (but not cutting edge) video card for gaming and I want to be able to capture TV and convert my hi-8mm tapes to VCD or DVD.

Someone suggested I get a seperate capture card.

What is the best approach for 1)performance and 2) costs.

I was thinking of a Radeon 9500 pro plus a good capture card (but I need some suggestions on brands)

(of course not set on 9500 if anyone has strong feelings on other vid. cards)

Matt

Keep in mind that my current video gaming card is a geforce 2gts....so any improvement will be great....

If that sig is accurate jumping to much more then a Geforce 3 may be overkill on that system and it becomes a severe bottleneck in the system....

Get at least dx 8.1 compliant hardware...

Again looking at that system and comparing it to my own I think YOU would be better served by hardware encoding versus software encoding that is more reliant on system performance. I remember the days with my 750 tbird at 845 and I could not capture near best quality size and settings without dropping frames...Now I do it with no more then 25-40 percent cpu utilization at the highest of all settings.....

IMO...get a seperate capture card...

You Might want to check out the ATI All in Wonder 8500.. Cheap with good gaming.

I never buy integrated capture cards. If you ever want to upgrade one of them, either the tuner or video card, you lose the other one. The Asus tv tuner is $80 at newegg and it does a bang-up job of capturing. When I get a job I'll likely upgrade my GF2 GTS too. :)
