Combining World of Warcraft with Diablo 2 style action?

I love WoW and am having a wonderful time playing it. I was thinking that if I could change anything about it, I would give it faster action... similar to Diablo II.

To me, the ultimate MMORPG would be a combination of WoW and Diablo II. I love the size of the WoW world and the variety of races, classes, quests, skills, etc. The turn-based fighting does get a bit boring to me sometimes, though. I miss the days of the absolute MADNESS of Diablo II. Whether PvE or PvP, Diablo II required lighting reflexes to survive through the arcade-style hacking and slashing. It was not only hack and slash, though, but a combination of attacking, running for your life, and firing off spells as fast as you could hit the F-keys. The only thing was that the game was small and limited, so there was only so much to do (even though I managed to sqeeze two years out of it).

I think that it would be wonderful to have a game like WoW but maybe a more top-down or 3/4 screen view with increased speed of the action. I know that it would be very hard on any machine to run a game like this completely in 3D, so maybe have 2D characters on a 3D background (I think Ragnarok Online does this). I know some people cringe at the mention of "2D graphics" but I'm not afraid to admit that I love 2D. There is just an unmatched level of beauty and detail that can be gained from hand-drawn 2D graphics on a more modern system, not to mention they are less taxing on the system. Then again, if there were a way to do 3D sprites as well, then by all means that should be what's done (think Warcraft 3). I do think that the world should be done in 3D either way, though, as it is much easier on the programmers... especially when expanding the content.

Ah... maybe someday there will be something like this. I think that given the success of both D2 and WoW, a game like this would be the most addictive game ever made.

I actually really like the combat system in WoW. I hated games like final fantasy where your guy just stands there, you pick a move, and he does it. With this system there's constant action and the moves/combos you can do are a lot deeper than a hack & slash game.

There were 2 things that kept me hooked on Diablo 2. First, it was the insane range of items, magic properties of the items, and the range of character builds, spells, etc. The second thing was the gameplay. It wasn't your traditional turn based RPG (I hate those), but it was a quick, hack and slash, spells flying everywhere kinda game that left you twitching and drooling in a seizure after staring at the flashing colors on your LCD monitor. It was the only RPG that required any real reflexes and skill at all, and that's what made it such a great game.

Although I've kicked the habit now, I think Diablo 2 was the best game of all time, and it was hard to keep away from. The human interaction wasn't only involved with fighting, the game was also heavily economic, which most people dislike but I though was ingenious. Oh well, time to move on.

Good times.

I think it's very D2-ish myself.

I'm currently addicted to guild wars right now. Don't get me started on Diablo 2 though :D

One thing that I think blizzard needs to change is the way characters are designed.

One of the biggest reasons City of Heros/villians is popular is the immense character customization. I would love to be able to make a buffed up, 8 foot tall troll as a warrior, or maybe make a fat human slob paladin. It would add so much to WoW if all the chars weren't the same build. I want to see some big taurens stomping around and orcs to not be so hunchbacked. More hair designs, colors, facial expressions, hieght/weight, muscularity, etc.

Also, and I know this is really hard to ipmlement, but it would be cool to have a feeling of real war between alliance and horde. Like having to hold your territory etc. And to add a little excitement, it would be tight if sometimes the alliance and horde would have to combine forces together to stop a wave of Burning legion ppl or something.

WoW character builds are the same across the board. There are only 1-2 variations per class, and everybody has the same gear eventually. (1 class set for each, then eventually tier 1 and tier 2 epic sets). My priest looks exactly the same as all the other priests on the server with our devout robes.

I know that UO had that option. You could choose from a 3D version (which was pretty horrible, but there nonetheless), or a top down 2D kinda thing, very much like Diablo but lamer.
