I had the same problem. I ordered my stuff from Performance PCs, and had them solder out the switch to where the thing was always on. That elimated the back plate (which was the most annoying). I then setup the 5V/12V/off switches (there are two on each) on my Zalman 6-channel fan controllers to control the power going to the amplifier box. The box is required, as it steps up the voltage as required by the cold cathode. But I hid the boxes, and the wires are going to the fan controller. Works rather well.
EDIT: By the way, the light doesn't work on 5V; just 12V. But it works as an on/off switch, which is just what I needed for the mod that I'm doing, of which is still in progress.
